Alexa tempts radio listeners to leave BBC for commercial stations

Britons increasingly prefer commercial radio stations to the BBC, according to the latest figures from Rajar, which also reveal how Amazon's Alexa is changing listening habits. The BBC has insisted it was no longer chasing traditional radio listening figures and was instead prioritising investment in podcasts via its BBC Sounds app to appeal to younger listeners. - www.theguardian.com

ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC are suing free TV streaming app Locast

Broadcast TV streaming app Locast had hoped that qualifying itself as a not-for-profit might be enough to avoid the wrath of the major networks and the same demise as Aereo. The broadcasters claim Locast is unlawful and could make it easier for TV providers to drop local stations ATT added the Locast app to DirecTV and U-verse set-top boxes back in May and has contributed funding to the service. - www.theverge.com

Consultation: Protecting participants in TV and radio programmes

We are proposing new rules to require broadcasters to ensure they take 'due care' of people participating in television and radio programmes, extending existing protections. Ofcom already has rules in the Broadcasting Code placing responsibilities on broadcasters around programme participants, and specific guidelines on the 'due care' required for minors who take part in programmes. - www.ofcom.org.uk

Ofcom: BritBox materiality assessment Relationship between BritBox and the BBC’s Public Service activities

The BBC has proposed to change BBC iPlayer from a service where programmes are available to ‘catch-up’ for 30 days after broadcast, to one where programmes are available for 12 months as standard, with some available for longer. As required by the BBC Charter and Agreement, we are carrying out a competition assessment, under which we: look at the public value provided by the BBC’s proposals, analyse the way in which they impact on competition, and consider whether that public value justifies any adverse impacts that we identify. This document sets out our analysis and provisional conclusions. We are consulting on our conclusions for four weeks and expect to publish our final conclusions by August 2019. - www.ofcom.org.uk

Licensing small-scale DAB How Ofcom would exercise new functions proposed by Government

Small-scale DAB is a new way of transmitting digital radio that uses advances in software and lowcost computer technology to provide a flexible and inexpensive approach to the terrestrial broadcast of digital radio services to a relatively small geographic area. The concept was first tested by Ofcom engineer Rashid Mustapha in 2012 and subsequently the Government funded a series of trials, licensed and facilitated by Ofcom, to test the feasibility of the technology. The trials demonstrated that small-scale DAB can provide a robust and reliable means for small analogue stations to broadcast on digital, - www.ofcom.org.uk
