Mrs Susan Ring: There are a number of subscription channels, such as Gold, Sky Sports and various adult channels plus Top up TV streams which your receiver might list in the channel list when doing a scan for channels. However it is impossible to view these channels without taking out a subscription and also using a suitable receiver such as a BT vision box or one which supports Top up TV which is able to unscramble the signal. Most Freeview boxes are unable to display these channels even if you wanted them, so don't worry, you can't be charged for having the channel name in the channel list! With regard to the adult channels, they have now changed position in the channel list to distance them from the general entertainment and shopping channels. It was probably this change that flashed up on your TV screen. If you are really bothered about them it is possible on some receivers to delete them, or make them subject to a 'child lock' but otherwise just ignore them.

I have recently retuned with the Kendal Transmitter but don't have any extra channels. Is this as expected? Thanks

Judi Palmer: During the recent changes the HD services moved from the 50s to the 100s. There were no changes to the standard definition Public Service services which are those offered by the Kendal transmitter.

Thnaks Dave, it's pretty poor compared to Ulverston which links to the Lancaster transmitter - does anyone know if any improvements are planned or whether we will continue to be second class citizens? Freeview in Thurso (Caithness) a couple of weeks ago had many more channels.

Judi Palmer: No, the Public Service-only transmitters like Kendal are likely to stay that way:

Londonderry transmitter | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

It won't be a given receiving the other channels from Lancaster. It is 16 miles away and Well Heads Hill and Heversham Head are 10 or 20m above line-of-sight to the transmitter. The COM channels (those that Kendal doesn't broadcast) are on lower power from Lancaster than its PSBs (those Kendal does broadcast).

The photos taken of your road by Streetview in March 2009 show a few aerials on Lancaster, although this is no guarantee that all services will be being received. Due to the lower-power COMs, these viewers may only have the PSBs.

Anyone had problems returning the BBC channels on C60 785.8, have a family member with a Loewe TV that are having problems returning, I'll be having a go at the weekend to sort it out but I had problems returning on my PC app DVBViewer, kept detecting C60 as freq 785.0, I had to hardcode in a setup file C60 785.8.

I'm wondering whether the TV will be similar issue, they've had not problem retuning a sony tv and tried the loewe with that aerial connection to prove it wasn't the aerial that was the issue

In the last three days my BBC1 etc group has either given no picture at all or it stops every second or so. I have retuned but this hasn't helped. Any suggestions? Thanks, Judy

Judy Palmer: The signal from Kendal Fell transmitter may also be good at your location and I wonder if your TV is choosing to go with it for BBC rather than Kendal.

Bring up the signal strength screen and observe which UHF channel it is tuned to. Kendal is on C60 and Kendal Fell is on C46.

There is a bit of a gap in the frequencies used by each transmitter so have your aerial unplugged until about 55% (or until it gets past UHF channel 46, if it gives channel numbers as it scans).

Danny: Maybe Freesat is the most straightforward and likely to work solution to increase viewer choice (including ITV4).

The only way to get it via terrestrial (Freeview) is if reception from a full service transmitter is possible. In your case you "might" be able to receive from Lancaster. This would give you BBC North West and ITV Granada, although you may be able to combine it (using a diplexer) with you existing aerial to give you the Commercial channels with BBC NE&C and ITV Border.
