LA6 2NL - Melling transmitter.

We have been periodicaly losing the signal from the Melling transmnitter ever since the digital service began.

Sometimes it only efects BBC. At other times BBC is the only one that is OK. At the moment (16:38 Saturday 07 May) it is effecting all chanels.

We are becoming sick and tired of the quality of our digital reception on Freeview as we are only 3 miles from Melling on the other side of the river.

Transmitter engineering: Some approximate indication as to when the Melling transmitter is expected back on air would be greatly appreciated.

John Baker: It is somewhat in the nature of a fault such as this (unlike planned engineering works) that it won't be fixed until whatever it is that has gone wrong is sorted out.

The oldest TV advice is the best here: do not adjust your set!

I live in Wray, just a few miles south of the Melling transmitter and use Freeview. For over a week now there has been severe pixilation and break up, but only on idependent TV channels. C4 and C5 being the worst with slight break up on ITV but BBC1, 2, News and Parliament are stable and rock steady. I have checked my mast-head power supply/ RF distribution amp and all connections and can find no fault. Within the last couple of years I've had a new aerial and downlead fitted. Any ideas anyone, or any known faults on the transmitter?

John Baker:

Your post code as given is just 3 km from the Melling transmitter so you should have a very good signal, maybe too much? Please will you check what the signal strength reported by your TV set is forthe channels giving the problem. Ideally you want between 60% and 85% strength - anything more will cause the problems you report.

If the signal is too strong then you can insert an attenuator into the aerial feed, but don't let the weight of it 'hang' on the aerial socket but use a short flylead to connect it to the back of the set. Attenuators are quite cheap and can be bought from several on-line suppliers or the likes of Maplins.

Let us know if that helps, please.
