If the Whitehaven relay serves 20,000 homes that's a lot for a relay, indeed more than some Scottish main trainsmitters which broadcast the full range of Freeview muxes. On those grounds, Whitehaven ought to have got the full range (3 PSBs and 3 COMs). As I've said elsewhere, at the very least, of the relays which were analogue only until switchover, the ones which serve 20,000 homes or more (e.g. Whitehaven, Bath) should have got all 6 muxes.

Sir Whitehaven first to be connected - brilliant.
First to have a very limited service as most of the channels are of poor quality and plus one hour takes up 2 0f the few we have. Not BrilliaT.
Interruptions to servic are frequent and very annoying - very poor indeed.
We thought we were way out in front of the rest of the country but binstead we find ourselves as poor relations.
Lets have some action at the very least on elimination of th interruptions to service.

Here in Whitehaven (the first area of UK to go digital) we were promised the moon - and are still waiting! Poor reception (plenty of pixelation, frequently out of synch sound etc, constant retuning (more than anyone else?))
Today 18/4/13 all channels (yes ALL of them - only about 12 anyway - NOT the around 60 promised - off air from 1030am to nearly 5pm (along with DAB radio - really super!!! - actually pathetic - now completely out of touch with the world)
When working ok - analogue never subject to all this unreliability thank gGod for FM radio (until that disappears!)
When, oh when, are we in Whitehaven going to get what we pay for - namely availability of same no of channels as the rest of the country (for the same licence fee)- and most of all a reliable service?
Singularly unimpressed - unreliable, few channels, no free HD TV.

Neil Bingham: Unfortunately the Whitehaven transmitter isn't ever likely to carry all the channels. The reason being that there are Public Service Broadcaster (PSB) channels whose coverage is the same as the former four-channel analogue.
The Commercial (COM) channels are available from 81 of the largest transmitters. They have no "Public Service" obligation and only exist to make a profit.
The Licence Fee does not give any guarantee of availability of any reception. However, it goes to the BBC, and as a Public Service broadcaster, it broadcasts from Whitehaven.

Ultimately though, it comes down to politicians not requiring the Commercial licensees to provide "universal" coverage, although there is some debate as to whether there would be enough frequencies to allow every last transmitter to carry those channels.
Freeview has four HD services which are BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD. These are carried on one of the PSB multiplexes and are therefore available from all transmitters.
The only thing to do is investigate the possibility of reception from a full-service transmitter.

Neil Bingham: I must've missed the memo which states that the licence fee goes towards providing anything but the BBC channels on Freeview, could you show me it please?
HD channels have been available from every single transmitter since switchover, and it's totally free if you have a Freeview HD TV.

This week from the Whitehaven transmitter although signal strength and quality are showing very good on the BBC channels on C43, all the independent channels are breaking up and the signal strength and quality vary between poor or none on C40. Do you know of any reason for this.

I live in Egremont nd have had no signal for my digital radios since Friday afternoon. Can u please tell me when this problem will be resolved. Also when it is restored to normal will my radios need retuning. It is now Sunday afternoon.
