Yesterday (30th November) I was having problems receiving BBC channels from the North Bovey transmitter - the ITV channels were fine. This morning I re-tuned my TV and found that I could receive HD signals on BBC channels - these were not available in the past. Have the old non-HD channels been weakened or changed? If so, it would have been nice to be notified of this change as a few of us are watching a lot of football at the moment!

Miles Thompson:

Nothing has changed at the transmitter and I can't find any faults currently reported or any in the last 5 days nor is the transmitter listed for Planned Engineering.

The North Bovey transmitter is a very low powered relay and it's possible that your location may give marginal reception.

If you provide a full postcode we can look at your predicted reception and which way the aerial should point.
If you are receiving from this transmitter, the aerial rods (or squashed Xs) should be vertical.

When was the last time you retuned? Has anything changed in your installation since then? Have you had a new aerial etc since June 2019 when the 700MHz Clearance was completed?

Your problems with reception of the BBCA/PSB1 multiplex (SD channels) yesterday is most likely due to current weather conditions causing some "Tropospheric Ducting" resulting in Interference coming from distant transmitters (in Europe or the UK) which is currently affecting some parts of the south and southwest.

Caution: It's never advised to retune if you have no signal or badly pixellated pictures as this generally just clears the correct tuning! Wait until signals are normal. Retuning will not affect reception is you are already correctly tuned!

Transmitter engineering: The BBC HD channels from the North Bovey transmitter are not working correctly, it is as if the bandwidth has been compromised to get the SD channels working satisfactorily. The ITV channels seem to be unaffected

Miles Thompson: The BBC's HD and SD channels are transmitted on different multiplexes so they cannot be compressing HD channels to fit in SD. The off-air monitoring of PSB3 from Caradon Hill (see link below - North Bovey will be identical) which carries BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, BBC3 HD, BBC4 HD, CBBC HD, CBeebies HD, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD & Channel 5 HD shows them all running at a similar average bitrate. I don't have any other insight into what might be causing your issue

Miles Thompson:

As you still haven't provided that full postcode as mentioned in reply to your December post, we can't check the predicted reception in your locale. As you mentioned you hadn't received the HD channels before, you could be in a marginal area, or have a fault on your aerial system.

Have you checked your aerial position as suggested? How old is the aerial installation?
Do you have any other equipment connected or aerial amplifiers/distribution amps/splitters or DVRs etc.?

Check you are tuned to the correct UHF channels for North Bovey - C46, C43 & C39.
Have you checked all the connections behind your TV etc?
When did this problem start - had you had any new electrical/electronic equipment around that time?

Your comment please
Please post a question, answer or commentIf you have Freeview reception problems before posting a question your must first do this Freeview reset procedure then see: Freeview reception has changed, Single frequency interference, and Freeview intermittent interference.

If you have no satellite signal, see Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'

If you have other problems, please provide a full (not partial) postcode (or preferably enter it in box at the top right) and indicate where if aerial is on the roof, in the loft or elsewhere.
