Are there any plans to upgrade the ambergate transmitter to a full freeview transmitter? i can only recieve basic channels currently living on the south side of the valley as the nottingham transmitter i think it is is out of range due to me being in the shadow of the hill?

Ben Cooper: No, this is not likely at all. See here for an explanation, which is equally as relevant for the Ambergate transmitter:

The Nottingham transmitter serves parts of the City that have difficulty receiving from Waltham. The hill that is in the way for you is preventing reception from Waltham which is the main transmitter in the East Midlands.
Generally speaking, Sutton Coldfield can be picked up well in Derby and northwards up the valley. I took the post code of The Canal Inn and the Digital UK predictor "thinks" that Sutton Coldfield might be a possibility at that location.
The Streetview photos were taken before switchover in July 2009 and at that time the majority of buildings seem to have aerials on Ambergate only. However, The Lord Nelson has ones on Ambergate and one on Sutton Coldfield which tends to add weight to the latter being a possibility.
I suggest that you investigate the possibility of reception from Sutton Coldfield. It provides West Midlands regional programming, but the UHF channels (frequencies) used by the two transmitters are such that two aerials could be diplexed, where the feed from each is combined into one downlead. This would allow you to watch the Commercial channels those that Ambergate doesn't broadcast from Sutton Coldfield and view the Public Service channels (including East Midlands regional programming) from Ambergate.

Geoff Sims: the status of the Ambergate transmitter is shown by BBC Engineering to be off air since 09.57 today, 8th July 2016. There is no time shown for an expected resumption of service.

Interesting .I'm sure the power has increased from the Ambergate transmitter. My street in Ripley is next to a wood which blocks the signal from Waltham quite a bit. The last time i was looking for Relays Ambergate was only a few watts but it seems to cover the whole of Ripley and surrounding areas now. Only Freeview light though so we're better off with Freesat still.

There's no 700MHz Clearance changes listed for the transmitter, or any power changes, still 37W apparently!
It could be that changes elsewhere have resulted in a little less co-channel interference and so slightly better coverage. Whether it remains like that, time will tell.

It's not currently listed for Planned Engineering and I can't find any listing of a fault BUT as it's a Relay of Waltham and Waltham is listed, work there could be having an effect.
Also, it might be Current weather conditions -
Tropospheric Ducting - causing interference from more distant transmitters in Europe or the UK. This can be very variable and is usually short term at any instant but conditions have been persisting for several days, different parts of the UK are being affected at different time. Not all multiplexes will be affected at any instant. Both Freeview and the BBC have issued warnings about short term interference to reception.
IF you were correctly tuned, Do NOT retune, whatever the cause, as this usually just clears your correct tuning if you have no signals or badly pixellated pictures. You'll then have to retune again when signals are normal and as you won't know when that is you may have to try several times.
