We get a lot of interference on the terrestrial channels in the evenings - perhaps a wireless baby alarm or lighting control system in the vicinity. I'm concerned that when we switch over this will have a worse effect than at present. How can I get this problem dealt with?

Clive Wilson: Its unlikely that it will unless possibly radiating from very close by like for example a next door neighbours, as low powered analogue TV signals are extremely vulnerable to be being interfered from even the lowest powered devices such as the type you have mentioned, the interference usually resulting in wavy or herring boned lines being seen across the picture.

These devices usually have a channel changing selection facility built into them. but of course this could well be academic unless you know who owns the device, as if you did you could explain the situation to them followed by requesting in a diplomatic fashion if they could change the channel.

The only point to note though is, that when the Digital transmitter does come into operation it radiates in roughly a circular pattern towards the South East, so it depends on wherever you are located in relation to the transmitter as to how good a signal you will receive, as anywhere that's located much outside of the pattern is liable to experience a very poor signal.

This all said of course taking it that you are referring to the Guisborough transmitter?

Clive Wilson: Meant also to include in my reply that there is also the possibility that's its actually interference from distant transmitters that is affecting your reception, this basically caused by atmospheric conditions that allow skywards bound signals from a distant transmitter to be reflected back down to the ground again at distances many miles away from the area where they are transmitted from.

Guisborough

It would appear that yet again Guisborough is going to end up with a half baked TV reception, getting only 16 channels (about 6 of which are radio!!) whereas Bilsdale is transmitting about 50 channels. When will the relay station get a decent upgrade?? or is it possible to aim a Yagi XB10K arial in the bilsdale direction and pick up a signal?

Andy M: There will be no "upgrade". Please see Will there ever be more services on the Freeview Light transmitters? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

On 26th September 2012, you will be able to get all services from Bilsdale, but not before.

I'm from Guisborough myself. Depending on which part of town you live in, you might be able to point your aerial at Bilsdale and receive Freeview signals. An aerial upgrade may be required as Bilsdale and Guisborough use different aerial groups. Although I've seen plenty of wideband aerials used in Guisborough.

John: I replied to your message earlier today!

Updated - changes to Freeview channel numbers this week on September 19th 2012 | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

If you are using the Guisborough transmitter, then it doesn't broadcast the Commercial channels and therefore you are receiving what is being broadcast.

Which transmitter you should be tuned to is that which your aerial faces. As the aerial is on your house, then surely you should be the ones telling us!!
