michael: one plan in the ofcom list suggests that the three coms become sfns, with more psb sfns to save frequency allocations.

Ilfracombe D3&4 has moved down to clear the 800MHz band. But so has Big Bully across the water. So CCI remains. The extra 3dB (how kind) will help a few, but only a few. This is but a wisp of what is to come. France is now urgently considering clearing 700MHz so as to trickle-feed the state's depleted coffers, as reported by Le Monde. Ofcom is like-minded and may well be forced to follow suite so as to minimise CCI along the south coast from across Le Manche.

It would be nice to know what these engineering works are intended to achieve. A few days ago I overheard people on the local bus complaining that they still could not get a consistently reliable television picture. It comes, breaks up then disappears for a while and so on. They were not happy as they had no problems when it was still analog. I don't know whether they understood that the cause was co-channel interference from Carmel "bouncing off" the rising and falling Bristol Channel. I am sure they would be happier to know that they endure an unacceptable service so that 3G and 4G companies can beef up their future profit margins...

michael: Is the answer as to what engineering works are intended to achieve obvious? The answer is the provision of television services.

Dave Lindsay: Indeed, but just regular maintenance, improvement of coverage, response to CCI, change of radiation patterns, additional services, DAB/FM radio, mobile services, or what?

michael: if there is no advanced notice posted then the work is an unscheduled situation. Meaning something broke beyond the ability of the system to be fixed automatically and/or remotely.

If I could afford DTG full membership I could have full details of planned work... But it's far too expensive...
