It's also worth noting that a commercial operator will also look at the potential revenue from advertising that can be made, which is not a function of the population, but the wealth of the people who will be watching the adverts:

With reference to the Derry / Londerry Transmitter which is now a Major issue in Derry
After your explaination on the matter i now understand the difference between PSB and Com. As we are only a relay transmitter, i have three questions to you
1) Would a main transmitter deliver all channels.
2) what would the rough cost be.
3) Is a cheaper option available for broadcasting all channels

matt: I don't think you've been pointed to this page which goes into it in more detail which you might be interested in:
Will there ever be more services on the Freeview Light transmitters? | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice
The COM licensees were required to broadcast from all main transmitters and the relays that carried low-power Freeview before switchover. They were invited to increase their coverage by transmitting from more sites and declined (follow link above for explanation).
I don't know what the cost might be, I'm not a professional. There would obviously be a ongoing maintenance and running costs too.
Also, there would need to be three broadcast channels made available that would not interfere with reception from other transmitters. Those used by each transmitter are planned so as not to have a detrimental effect on viewers of other transmitters, within each transmitter's intended service area.

Freesat is probably the best way to get extra channels in areas that are Freeview Lite. See here for a comparison:

ITV3 is on Freesat, contrary to its logo appearing alongside those that aren't.

Briantist: Thanks for those numbers.

Since you have all of the data, any chance you could provide a list of the top 20 Freeview light transmitters by homes they provide TV to? :)

Patrick: It depends where you are as to whether you can receive them or not. You may need a second aerial.

A Freeview HD has all the requirements to receive RT whether this comes from a transmitter in the Republic or one of the Freeview transmitters that carry these services.

If you are in the Derry area then Holywell Hill is probably the most likely transmitter to use. This will require a separate aerial to that which points to Sheriff Mountain and carries UK Freeview channels. It will be possible to combine the two aerials into one cable/feed so that you can watch both without having to swap aerial leads or use a different box.

Look around to see what your neighbours have. Aerials pointing to Sheriff Mountain will be vertical (elements up/down) and aerials on Holywell Hill will be horizontal (elements flat).

Briantist that makes some very interesting reading. This transmitter in Limavady is a joke because if it was positioned somewhere else it could have covered Derry, Limavady, Coleraine etc and have a much higher viewer count.
