Simply because the Marlborough transmitter is not up to it. Across the board, in the catchment area of the Marlborough Transmitter, the service has been dropping in and out. Tales from Great Bedwyn to Mildenhall and more of non-service, particularly on Friday morning for people watching the wedding - and no recompense will be offered.

Maurice: It appears there were a number of faults at the transmitter at the weekend, but you've complained before this when no issues were reported.

At that distance from the transmitter, too much signal is a possibility. If you have a booster or amplifier, try removing it.

Yesterday afternoon I retuned our 2 TV's as suggested to receive the extra Olympics channels. The TV worked for an hour or so but then we had a "no signal" notice on the screen and since then we have had no signal. We have checked the aerial which is in the roof and tried to retune again this morning, but still no signal. Please help.

Chris : Not via terrestrial television.

Marlborough isn't likely to ever broadcast any of the Commercial (COM) multiplexes which Sky Sports (subscription) and other free-to-air services. There appear, looking at Digital UK Postcode Checker, that there are no other transmitters that might provide you with the full complement of channels.

Hello,
My sigal is fine at SN8 4AU, but why is it that the Mendip area only has a light transmitter, therefore preventing me from recieving all freeview channels? Such as ITV 4 and Film 4 amoungst others. Is this liekely to change or can I do something to recieve them as I don't realy want to buy Sky for channels which are free to air! Thanks.

Natasha: The Mendip transmitter carries all channels. You are receiving from Marlborough which is a small transmitter that relays Mendip's PSB channels and exists because reception from Mendip is difficult or not possible.

The small "filler-in" transmitters are never likely to get the full complement of channels because those that don't broadcast from such sites are run purely for profit and have no Public Service obligation, unlike BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. See here for an explanation:

Londonderry (Northern Ireland) digital TV transmitter | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

There is the free-to-air satellite service Freesat which offers more channels than are available from the Marlborough transmitter, including ITV4 and Film4.

Here is a comparison full Freeview vs Freesat:
