Nick: Possibly.
Be aware that Caldbeck's COM channels (those that Whitehaven doesn't broadcast) are on low power of 15kW until 24th October so as to protect against interference in Northern Ireland until it switches over to digital. On that date they will go up to their full final power of 50kW.
The Digital UK predictor "thinks" that all Calbeck COM channels will be variable after that date, presumably due to Divis (the transmitter in Northern Ireland) being co-channel. I say this because one of the COMs is predicted as being good now, when they other two are regarded as variable.
The predictor should be taken with a pinch of salt as such systems can never be entirely accurate. Therefore, I wouldn't be too concerned that reception "will" be variable the objective for the installer is to get it in the best spot.
Different aerials work differently, and so the result could be perfect uninterrupted viewing.
What I can say for certain is that the final situation (both of Caldbeck and the possible interfering Divis) will not be arrived at until 24th October.

Nick: Just to add that if you intend to do it yourself, or get a friend or family member to assist, then you will find a wealth of information on ATV Sheffield's website, as well as an online shop.
Caldbeck uses all Group A channels, so don't be tempted to buy a wideband aerial from a DIY shop as they aren't as sensitive on Group A channels. See this page, including following the link "See the wrong aerial for any A group transmitter":

Hi I am currently on the Whitehaven lite transmitter but want to change to Caldbeck to increase the number of channels available. Should this be possible at CA28 6NN?

Dave: Not sure - perhaps roof-top will be required. DUK certainly "thinks" COMs are variable, although as I say above, take it with a pinch of salt.
In any case, Caldbeck's COMs (those channels that don't broadcast from Whitehaven) are on low power until 24th October when Northern Ireland completes switchover. So I wouldn't try anything until then. See my posting above 30 August 2012 10:44AM for a greater explanation.
If your aerial is a Group B one, then this will not be suitable for Caldbeck which is all group A.
Wideband yagis have less gain at group A channels, so if you get a yagi, then get a group A one. See:

Also, have a look around to see if your neighbours have switched to Caldbeck, although the low power COMs may mean that there is presently no advantage as only PSBs will be available (same as Whitehaven).

Dave: If you want to carry out some research, then see how good the signals from Caldbeck on UHF channels 25 and 28 (BBC and ITV respectively) are. HD is on C30, if applicable.
When the COMs go on their full power, this won't be as great as the PSBs. This means that if you can't receive the PSBs from Caldbeck, then logically you aren't going to get the COMs post 24th October.

If the Whitehaven relay serves 20,000 homes that's a lot for a relay, indeed more than some Scottish main trainsmitters which broadcast the full range of Freeview muxes. On those grounds, Whitehaven ought to have got the full range (3 PSBs and 3 COMs). As I've said elsewhere, at the very least, of the relays which were analogue only until switchover, the ones which serve 20,000 homes or more (e.g. Whitehaven, Bath) should have got all 6 muxes.
