Dave: The reality is that Dave and Quest are commercial channels and their owners are not prepared to pay for their channels to be broadcast from over 1,000 additional transmitters in order to go from covering 90% of UK households from 80-90 transmitters to covering 98.5% of households from 1,100+ transmitters. If you only get the Freeview Lite service and want more channels then you should look at getting Freesat, which has most of the same channels that available on full service Freeview transmitters, for a one off cost of a box and dish plus installation (just the box if the property has previously had Sky).

Anyone able to get the HD channels ok from this transmitter C57 (762.0MHz) - note SD channel More4+1 on this mux has the same issue, while it lists the channels upon retune, the signal is next to zero. The retunes to the other mux are ok with 90%+ signal quality.

TV doesn't allow me to manually tune so unable to try against Kendal Fell transmitter.

Ruby ford:

It'll simply be a matter of economics. The Kendal "Light" transmitter serves around 15,000 households.
Such transmitters often only serve these smaller communities and the commercial operators don't consider it cost effective to pay for the extra transmission equipment to provide the 3 COM multiplexes, even if there were spare frequencies available.
Relay "Light" transmitters which only have the 3 main PSB multiplexes, are often provided for areas where signals can't be reliably received from a main transmitter due to the terrain in the location eg. in a valley. Depending on location some may be able to receive a main transmitter.

If you provide a full postcode we may be able to advise if there's any possibility of getting signals from a main transmitter, however this would most likely be Granada region rather than Border.

The other option would be to consider Freesat.
Some fairly recent TVs have built-in satellite tuners. Apart from looking at the TV Tuning section which can show a satellite tuner if present, the other clue is the presence of an F-connector on the back of the set, as well as the usual "belling type" coax socket for aerials. If the TV has a satellite tuner you'd only need a Dish and LNB.

Jeremy Johnson: I'm not sure what you are referring to with respect to BBC London. If it is BBC One HD, then the BBC rolled out regional BBC One HD variants:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/med…land

Previously there were no regional variations on BBC One HD, and viewers had to watch regional programming on BBC One SD.

The reason as to why there are no COM multiplexes (including ITV3 and ITV4) from Kendal transmitter and its relays is because the operators have no obligation to provide a public service. At DSO the 80 or so transmitters that carried pre-DSO DTT became full-service transmitters, carrying all six multiplexes.

It was said that this provided coverage to 90% of the population and that for them (the COM operators) to serve the other 9% which are able to receive terrestrial TV would cost about the same as it cost to provide coverage to the 90%. Thus, it made no sense from a commercial perspective.

Generally speaking, the smaller the transmitter, the higher the cost-per-viewer to run the transmitter. That is, if you take the cost to run the transmitter and divide by the number of viewers using it (who could not otherwise receive from another, existing transmitter), the figure is higher for the smaller transmitters.

In some spots in and around Kendal it is possible to receive the COM channels from another transmitter, notably Lancaster. However, the ITV region of Lancaster is different to that of Kendal. Lancaster is as Winter Hill, carrying BBC North West and ITV Granada. The Kendal transmitter and its relays carry BBC North West and ITV Border. Caldbeck carries BBC NE&C and ITV Border.

For those living in locations (probably higher up) where Lancaster is available, if they wish to watch ITV Border and the COMs then two aerials may be required. Lancaster (including COMs) are all group A so could combine with Kendal or Kendal Fell. I guess you may have provided such solutions to those fortunate enough to be able to pick up from Lancaster and prepared to go to the extra expense of a second aerial.

Steve Donaldson: The BBC satellite backup feed usually carries London (there is only a single backup feed rather than a separate one for each region) so that would suggest that the transmitter may be having issues with its main feed (which according to the MB21 site is fed by fibre rather than off-air from another transmitter). ITV3 and ITV4 moved to the PSB2 mux several years ago and should be broadcast from Kendal, along with ITV1, ITV2, Channel 4, Channel 5, E4, More 4, Film 4 etc.
