We have a FM Omni aerial on our chimney in Conon Bridge with booster and struggle to receive FM radio stations. We wish we could receive the radio Scotland news for the Highlands and Islands which has such interesting bulletins. We know it is available on the Internet but we are a long way from the Dingwall exchange so there is a poor service. We wonder if investing in a larger aerial is worth while, do you have any suggestions.

Deryck Hughes: A directional aerial would be likely to improve the signal, as by it's nature, it has a better gain. What in fact happens is that the sensitivity of a directional aerial is greater in one direction at the expense of the other directions. So that is where the improved "gain" comes from.
Obviously the downside to such an antenna is that it won't be as sensitive picking up signals from other directions. However, if you are in an area where the only services that you could possibly receive (or only those you want) are coming from one direction, then that's probably not such a great issue; the improvement in gain where the signal is weak is what you want.
For lots of information on aerials, see ATV Sheffield's site:
FM / DAB Radio Aerials
BBC Radio Scotland is on Freeview in Scotland, logical channel number 719. As you're using a roof-top FM aerial I take it that you're listening on a hifi rather than a portable radio. You could either use your existing Freeview receiver (connecting it to your hifi), or purchase a cheap set-top box to site adjacent to your hifi which will allow you to receive Radio Scotland and other BBC national radio stations. Once it has been set-up, there may be no need to have it connected to the television, although the only issue might be that they don't usually have a display on so you won't know easily what channel its on.

Deryck Hughes: Checking your postcode with the BBC reception service reveals that officially you are out of coverage for FM radio services. However it does suggest that you could have reception of DAB from Mounteagle, which transmits the Inverness local DAB multiplex. This carries BBC Radio Scotland. If you are able to borrow a DAB radio it could be worth a try.You are,I assume needing to receive the opt-outs for Highlands and Islands for the news bulletins that you require. These would not be carried on Freeview or satellite, which only carry the basic BBC Radio Scotland national service.

Can someone advise why in 2018 the Auchmore Wood transmitter is only able to offer a restricted amount of Freeview channels. In Conon Bridge we received 20 TV Channels, 6 HD Channels and 13 radio stations. We moved from Maryburgh, one mile away, a few years ago and there they receive signals from Rosemarkie transmitter which provides 77 TV Channels, 6 HD Channels and 29 radio stations. Quite a difference. When is Auchmore to be upgraded?

L MacLachlan: Its not. Its a Light transmitter, and the commercial broadcasters dont think the cost of using it is worth it. See Steven's answer to a similar question here: I can't get Freeview yet, when will it start in my area?

We have lived in Conon Bridge since 2005 and have used Auchmore. The service and signal has been poor over the years, in spite of using a large aerial high on the chimney. Some days the signal was so bad, it was unusable. In 2016 the aerial was blown away & replaced with a smaller one, with a strong steel mast, the signal was slightly weaker. A few months later our Sky satellite disk failed & was replaced, at the same time we asked the engineer to turn our terrestrial aerial from Auchmore to Rosemarie. To everyone's surprise this provided a satisfactory signal for the main channels (unlike Auchmore) but the others were poor. We have continued to use this but have supplemented it with Freesat using a Humax recorder which we think is excellent and better than Sky. Hope this helps.
