Mandy Ellis - If you plan on giving up SKY you could consider a "Freesat" Satellite recorder with a built in Hard Drive of Which there are several produced by different manufacturers. This would also give access to iplayer and the ITV player catch up services via Broadband connection.

Hi, I'm Andy
New to this thread, please bear with me if already dealt with .....
My sister lives in Ilkley and has lived without Freeview. How can she find out if her analogue reception is from Wharfedale transmitter and hence OK with some limitations after switchover, or from Addingaham and hence very limited including no HD?
If latter, what are Ikley folk able to do about it?

Andy B: A full postcode would be a very good place to start...

Andy B: Wharfedale and Addingham will transmit the same channel line-up after switchover. Only Emley Moor, Idle and Keighley will transmit all six multiplexes, as they have done for at least 10 years.
All transmitters will transmit HD signals.
That doesn't mean that you can't get them from those transmitters, as power levels will be greatly increased from their current levels, and some directional restrictions may be removed.
The best way to find out is to use Digital UK's postcode checker at Digital UK - Home . If you provide a full postcode, we can check for you.
If the aerial points west, you should be tuned to Addingham. If it points east, you should be tuned to Wharfedale.

Andy B: OK, you only have the ability (as Mike says above) to get signal from "Freeview Light" transmitters at that postcode.
If you want more channels, then you have to use Freesat - see Compare Freeview Light and Freesat TV | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

Andy B: Go with Wharfedale, if you have a choice. Digital UK's postcode checker suggests that signals from Addingham are going to get trampled by the commercial multiplexes from Bilsdale once it switches over - they use the same frequencies.
The proximity of Addingham means that you're very unlikely to be able to get those commercial multiplexes from Bilsdale - same reason.
