Thanks for the feedback on this.
I certainly will try Whitehawk Hill after checking Patcham first. With regard to licence fee, having had the luxury of being on the Heathfield transmitter in Lewes with it's mix of PSB and commercial, good and bad, I think that you will have a job persuading licence fee payers to accept a lesser service. In Lewes, half a mile separates three or more years of full Freeview service from relay users who will have to wait until June to get a fairly thin service. However, as stated above, some Freeview is better than none, and you could say that what you have never had, you won't miss. However, this being the UK we will quietly roll over and accept gratefully what we are given. I can't see the residents of say, USA, being so obliging.

Mr P.Slater: The licence fee only funds BBC services, which are provided from all transmitters and also on satellite and cable. The licence fee has to be paid if you can receive a TV signal, no matter which other services you can get on top of the BBC channels.

There are lots of other countries with licence fee arrangements, the USA being a notable exception.

Television licence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia lists Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Mercedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Romaina, Solenia, Serbia, Sweeden, Swizterland, Turkey .. Israel, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Brazil...

Dave: Yes. The only things that don't work in 8k mode are listed here - TVs and boxes that do not support the 8k-mode | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice - and they are all about a decade old.
