Niall: Well Digital UK's trade predictor indicates that you should presently be able to get good reception from Winter Hill, but not Emley Moor until 2012, even then with it still not being quite as good as Winter Hill.
You should try a manual tune on Mux Ch62 (BBC1) and Mux Ch59 (ITV1) these being Winter Hills main channels, Winter Hill being 14 miles away @ 250 degrees from your location, and even although not exact, you might be able to pick Winter Hill up on the rear of your aerial.

Niall: Just to add, the only one aspect concerning your aerial thats liable to restrict reception on any test carried out, is that because its presently set for Bacup it will be mounted as vertically polarised, (elements top to bottom) whereas Winter Hill being a main transmitter is horizontal.
Sometimes dependant on the type of aerial being used, using it on the incorrect polarity can affect a signal more than it does if receiving on its rear, your test being carried out with both the mentioned applying!

thanks Jb38 for your reply, I have tried the manual tune you recommended on Mux ch62 and Mux ch59 but have not received any channels so it dose seem that i will have to get an TV aerial engineer out to have a look at the aerial on the roof as it seems to be set for Bacup transmitter only.

tracy, mike: The BBC reception website (accessed via www.bbc.co.uk/reception ) reports that the transmitter is off air from 09:35 which is as "Transmitter engineering" post above (it does say "BBC" in square brackets which I think means that's where it's been sourced from).

Tracy,
The transmitter goes down regularly for several hours at a time. I moved to Bacup 18 months ago and it's like living in a third world country. This time the mobile phone network is also affected and still down now. It's as though they want everybody to buy Sky so they can shut off the mast for good.

will the Bacup transmitter ever be able to give us all channels, I keep seeing 2012 as being the time when everyone gets everything (channel wise anyway :) )
I would like to be able to get rid of my Virgin box but am reluctant to until this happens

Rob: It is most unlikely that the Bacup transmitter will ever transmit additional muxes. The owners of the COM muxes were asked if they wished to extend their services to the relay sites and they declined on the grounds that it would about double the transmission costs whilst only serving a very small percentage of viewers. Many viewers in the Bacup transmitter coverage area are also able to receive signals direct from Winter Hill or Emley Moor. Installing a replacement or additional aerial will deliver the COM muxes if they are required, otherwise satellite reception is possible for most viewers requiring extra channels, although the selection does differ somewhat from that supplied on Freeview.
