Louisa: According to BBC Reception, Bacup is working. BBC only mentions issues with its own services.

The posting immediately above yours from Transmitter engineering says that BBC TV was off the air from 19:16 to 22:45 on Saturday evening. The source is the BBC (as noted by the "[BBC]" at the end), so could have affected all channels.

anytime I use BBC iplayer, over the last ten days, but particularly the last four days, I get ten minutes of programme and then it crashes my Vision Box so that everything has to be reloaded and scans for new channels. It doesn't happen on any other channel. What's going on?

Bacup

Hi there

I'm new to Freeview coming from Satellite. I understand that Bacup's parent transmitter is Winter Hill and that I'm 'just' able to get coverage according to the maps.
The question is can I get away with an amplified indoor aerial, or do I need to get the ladders out? I'm expecting this might be a 'try it' scenario...

Lastly, if I do pick up a reception with an indoor aerial - presumably they will pick up from multiple transmitters?

Thanks in advance!

Chris: If your in an area with just Freeview light, why move from sat.? You'll get far more channels than on a lite transmitter. Something like a Humax Freesat tuner/PVR would be a better buy.

Chris: A "coverage area" is a rough guide -- it's much more a question of whether one is able to receive at a particular spot and how easy/difficult that might be owing to objects in the way.

Here is a terrain plot between you at Winter Hill:

Terrain between ( m a.g.l.) and (antenna m a.g.l.) - Optimising UK DTT Freeview and Radio aerial location

The ground around 3 and 3.5 miles out is just in the way and this corresponds to Cowpe Lowe. Further -- and again this is simply a guide -- Digital UK Coverage Checker suggests you might have excellent reception.

You might get away with an indoor aerial. I would suggest that without a doubt a log periodic aerial such as the Log 36 or DM Log:

ATV`s Choice Of Aerials for digital TV

Other suppliers are available. ATV has lots of information on the site to help DIYers.

I believe that the "Log 36" is a Vision model:

TV Aerials Catalogue ? Vision Products - Powerful Products. Easy Installation. Excellent Value

The "DM Log" is manufactured by Blake.

I live in Bacup and get my Freeview TV via rooftop aerial that has been in place (and working fine) for years. For several weeks now, service has been erratic. (Picture breaking up or not avaialble at all). Sometimes only BBC channels are available and working ok; on other days BBC channels are unavailable, but ITV stations are ok. I haven't seen all the usually available channels working properly at the same time for ages. Is this problem known about? Is there something going at the transmitterr which explains this? Something has changed this year. I don't recall seeing any problem like this at all last year. What is the explanation for some channels working and others not?

Rod:

As you can see from the post before yours, the transmitter last had a reported fault back in January.
Are your neighbours having the same problem?

If your neighbours are having the same problem, it's possible that it may currently be weather related issues due to "Tropospheric Ducting" which should clear in due course.

Otherwise, which way is your aerial pointing? It's possible you might receive several transmitters at your location and you may not be currently tuned to the best signals. We'd need a full postcode to look at predicted reception in your locale.

It's possible if your aerial installation is quite old that your installation may have developed problems. Check the aerial looks intact and is still pointing the correct way, check your downlead looks secure and undamaged. Check you coax connections and plugs for signs of corrosion etc.
Have you changed anything in your installation recently?
