Are there any chances of an extended selection of channels being broadcast from the calne transmitter?

Lee: The chances are extremely slim to none.

But according to the Digital UK tradeview link to the right of your post, you may be able to pick them up from Mendip.

Lee: Practically non-existant.

The reason is because the Commercial broadcasters (those that don't transmit from Calne and over 1,000 or similar small transmitting stations) don't consider the investment worth the return. They serve 90% of the population and the cost to broadcast from these other transmitters would be roughly equal to what they pay now on 81 of the largest transmitters. It would, however, only add 9% of the population to their potential viewer bases.

As Michael says, Digital UK suggests you might be in a location where the full-service from Mendip can be received. Have a look around to see if neighbours have gone for this option.

Calne aerials are vertical (elements up/down) and Mendip ones are horizontal (elements flat) and 44 degrees anti-clockwise of those facing Calne.

Lee:
I live 3 miles from Calne and know the transmitter there, near John Bentley School. There is no chance of it ever getting any of the commercial services as the coverage area has too few customers, so there is little potential for sufficient advertising income being generated.
Depending on where in Calne you live you just may be able to get signals from Mendip, but many parts of Calne are hidden from that by the hills. Oxford Road, New Road and some parts of Quemerford can't use Mendip, partly because of the hill in Castlefields Park. Best to look at where your neighbours aerials are pointing and which way the small elements across the main arm are positioned. If they are vertical and the aerial points in the general direction of John Bentley then they are using the 'relay'. If the aerial points south west and the elements are horizontal, then they are using Mendip. The most useful indicators are your immediate neighbours aerials.

Calne

A slight stretch away from strict Freeview --but BT TV does not appear on the detailed Calne transmitter channel listing here so will it work in this area and will I be able to get BT Sport since they 'nicked' MotoGP from BBC2. Is it worth signing up for BT TV?

Thanks

JamesD: The Calne transmitter is a freeview light one so no, BT Sport is not available.
If you are a BT internet customer BT Sport is free in standard definition in a few way's i phone, computer etc. If you have BT Infinity (fibre) then with a youview box will provide BT Sport both in SD and HD plus ESPN HD and many more internet based channels available on Sky and Virgin.

JamesD: As Russ Dring says, BT Sport isn't broadcast by the Calne transmitter.

The Digital UK Coverage Checker suggests that you "might" be able to receive all channels from Mendip. Such predictions never be totally accurate, and this is particularly so in situations like yours where the transmitter cannot be seen.

There are trees in the way on the high ground which is in the way and they could affect you, and such effects could be seasonal.

If you do decide to have a shot at reception from Mendip then I suggest you retain your Calne aerial as a back-up, incase reception from Mendip does deteriorate.

You don't give a Post Code so we can't be sure of where in Calne you live. If we could, then we'd be able to determine whether it is worth trying to get signals from Mendip. I live in Bremhill, so know the area well and knowing which road you are on (and which part if it is a long one like London or Oxford Roads) would help us to help you.

Russ Dave Mike:
Many thanks for your answers. My post code is SN11 0RY Marden Way and though some neighbours use Mendip with masts and Ae amps etc they all say it is not solid reception. I've got Freesat but BT are flogging their TV for £1.69 a month on contract renewal presently with a free Rx box but if no BTsport to get the MotoGP without new and expensive dodgie Ae it gives me nothing more than getting already.
Their sale's bods are heavily pushing BTsport but don't mention limited area coverage!!! bad lads.

Many thanks & Cheers

James
