My daughter has moved in to a rented house in NR2 3HD. We were told there was a TV aerial, which is there, but it has no connection on the end of the cable which does not even go to the living room. There is a satellite dish with cable going in to the living room.
How do you suggest they could get a signal, given that they will not be able to test whether the dish is working without buying a box, or make any changes to the rooftop aerial. Thanks for suggestions, PS have only just discovered that DSO is not until November there.

Pat G: Well, without having any devices to use for a test then there isnt any way to check other than physically, which you have already done as far as the co-ax with no plug on it is concerned.
I will say that although switchover isnt until November 23rd the predictions are that reception should presently be possible from Tacolneston,(@ 9 miles away) so if you are also in the area and have a small Freeview TV it would be advantageous to try it out at your daughters house, preferably if pre-tuned to Tacolneston as it would save going through the scanning procedure.
I only mention Freeview as its less of a hassle to test this over a Satellite set up using a TV and separate box.

Since the switchover we can only get BBC channels (21) mostly radio stations and all of them have problems with the picture breaking up. The signal strength is 8 - the The aerial is in the loft and we never had a problem before the switchover. We have a grundig digibox model gud1500X1 We have tried many times a day to try to tune it in again with the same results. A neighbour says their tv eventually corrected itself. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Sally: Is your aerial pointing it Tacolneston (roughly south south west)?
Did you get digital (Freeview) channels before switchover? Did the aerial work with analogue (and does it still do so) ? Perhaps it's being in the loft that's the main problem.

If it is Tacolneston, it will say "55" alongside "No of Channel" when you go into the menu and select "Accessories" and then "Information". (DN31NJ)

i wonder why after everthing has been sorted and i've retuned several times i still only get 74 channels and i've used a maxview signal strength meter with all 4 led's lit the worst thing is i live in line of site.. poringland to tacolneston, am using a masthead and 4 way amp. any idea's

john tansley: Being located at only 9 miles from Tacolneston and using the type of aerial system described, your receiving equipment is very likely to be suffering from its tuner being overloaded, and it should be pointed out that in this type of situation the readings you will see of the signal strength etc can be totally inaccurate.
I would normally have requested you try by- passing the amplifier, but with a mast head type that's not possible, so purely for a test try a set top aerial and see what indications you have from that, although the best test of all is to insert an attenuator in line with the aerial socket.
In other words, the symptoms of an overly powerful signal are exactly the same as that of a weak one, this being the aspect that misleads the unwary.

john tansley: Also meant to add, that the mast head amplifier itself can also suffer from the effects of an over powerful signal, and although this is not just so sensitive to overloading as is the receivers tuner, it can however sometimes partially block the signal rather than amplify it, this being the reason for my request to try using a set top aerial (purely for a test) as the results obtained would enable a better assessment to be made for the reason of the reportedly low signal.
That said though, a better assessment could be made with knowledge of the readings seen if you carried out a signal test using your TVs signal checking menu. (also of assistance to know the model of TV).

Alistair Mackie: Unfortunately no! as Norwich Central is a PSB only relay, as the purely commercial interests that would be involved if it was anything more than PSB not being willing to contribute towards the running costs involved of any additional multiplexes, as the returns expected would be outweighed by the running costs.
