I have my aerial on the roof of my bungalow, i would like to know why i cannot receive film 4 5* or 5 usa as i view these on sky all the time and want to cancel my sky package.

joan marsh: Its basically because that your local (less than 1 mile) Clacton station is a PSB only transmitter and does not transmit the commercial channels used by the programmes mentioned.
However, if you cancel your Sky package you will still be able to watch these programmes on your Sky box because a card is not required to be able to view them, you can verify this by removing your Sky card whilst on one of these programmes.

joan marsh: Further to the comment by jb38, it would appear that aerials on your road are pointing at Sudbury rather than the Clacton-on-Sea transmitter, which carries only PSB channels.
You "may" find that a replacement aerial will bring in the COM channels which carry Film 4, 5*, 5 USA and others.
The COM channels don't have as good coverage as the PSBs, so some people are without, or may be able to gain them by adjusting or replacing their aerial.

I've lost all signal from both TV Ariel sockets.
Tried plugging 2 different TVs in plugging and unplugging cables, switching on and off and repeatedly retuning to no avail.
Is there a transmitter problem affecting the South Essex area?

Heath Blair: If both TVs are fed from the same aerial then how does the feed cable from the aerial split two ways?
If it's a powered amplifier (booster) then this must be the first thing to suspect. Even if the power light is on, it doesn't mean that the device is functioning normally.
If it's accessible, disconnect the lead coming in from the aerial and connect it directly to one of the leads going out to one of the rooms. Then go to the TV and see if it works.

There are 2 wall sockets in different rooms, I think they come down from roof a single Ariel on different sides of the house. Tried direct socket plug, bypassing booster, no joy.

Heath Blair: If what you believe to be a booster is in fact connected to the wall socket in one of the rooms then it might be that it is not a booster but a power supply for a booster which is on the roof, or perhaps in the loft. In such circumstances you haven't disconnected the booster, but just removed its power supply.
If the device has a manufacturer's name and model number on it may allow identification of its purpose.

Thanks Dave, the thing that puzzles us is why one portable tv (which is more sensitive to weak signals) lost its signal completely a few days before the main tv. Both tv sockets have electric boosters. In addition I think there is another powered booster in the loft - installed 6 years ago, probably under insulation installed 2 years ago. The house is in a dip in the landscape hence the need for the boosters. Next door neighbour is still receiving a signal. Any other suggestions welcome?

Heath Blair: The advice remains as it was before - that the first thing to suspect is the booster.
A mains powered booster should not be covered with insulation because it will prevent the heat from escaping and is a fire risk. Perhaps it has overheated due to the insulation.
If the boosters in each room were installed to boost the digital signal before switchover, then they can probably be removed now that switchover has happened.
Most aerials on your street are west-facing, to Crystal Palace. There are one or two north-facing aerials, to Rouncefall/Sudbury. Is your neighbour using the same transmitter as you?
