Enjoying your site, it really helps us who don't know too much are this subject. Now come the please help bit, said in a nice way of course.
I live in Pitsea, Basildon just a couple miles passed Basildon in Essex. TV in this part of the country has always been a problem, but its totally poor pictures. Its more 100% great........the only problem, both the ITV and BBC offer top rate local news, and pictures. South and East Essex find the site at BlueBell Hill near Maidstone in Kent give a super service picture and soundwise.........How lots in this part of Essex, from along the Thames Estuary town around Southend, Basildon, Pitsea, towards Clacton all here in Essex.

Question, the site at BlueBell Hill in Kent was first switched around around 1986, and offered a BBC and ITV London area service, which was'nt bad, But here in Essex, The Sudbury service was fair ,not the best out of the three regionals we was able to watch, other being Dover TX. Then overnight in 1983 ? The BlueBell Hill, service switched its programming from London, to South and SouthEast ITV and BBC London at first then a total blackout, its became of the BBC's South and East.........from that time onwards Essex, the River Thames
and all those towns along the thames estuary, Basildon, Southend Clacton, was even heard of the BBCs new SouthEast tv service, lovely picture still.........

The funny part about we heard a few years later, that the people that should know........did'nt know many many and still tv viewers today have to enjoy South East London and Kent news, give a good word to ITV who try to keep our area on the map or two to try to service Essex.

The footnote , to this tale, I think was around the late 1980s, a survey was carried out in North Kent asking people what regional news do you want London or South East............think you can all guess what they hopped for....................Bearing in mind that last part, I would not say it was 100% right, But heck , it would not be wrong to say it anyway.

Over the last few weeks the Rouncefall transmitter has been off air for engineering work, when it goes off I thought I would be able to receive BBC, ITV etc from Sudbury were I receive everything else from from but there's nothing. My aerial is pointing to Sudbury and all channels are 60% strength and 100% quality.
Rouncefall is only 2km away and the signal strength is 100%. As Rouncefall and Sudbury transmit on the same frequency as I said I thought I would receive something from Sudbury. If that all makes sense? My post code is SS5 4JN, both Rouncefall and Sudbury are just east of north from me.

John Stone: Hi, John. According to Digital UK, you should indeed be able to receive Freeview from the Sudbury transmitter, but do remember that the Sudbury transmitter is not in the town itself, but is at a site a few miles South-East of the town in-between Little Cornard and Bures. I would also inform you that your tv receiver needs to be 'informed' ( i.e. 'told') that you are trying to receive from a different transmitter and so if you wish to receive from Sudbury, you need your tv receiver to forget about Rouncefall, which means carrying out two full re-tune procedures, the first with your aerial lead disconnected altogether, so the tv forgets Rouncefall and then the second re-tune with your aerial lead reconnected. Both re-tunes should be of the 'first-time installation' type. Bearing in mind that the Sudbury transmitter isn't in Sudbury itself, you may also need to rotate your aerial a little to ensure you're aligned on to the Sudbury transmitter when trying to receive from it. Hope this information will help, Richard, Norwich.

Richard Cooper: Sudbury and Rouncefall form a single frequency network (SFN) where the PSB multiplexes are broadcast on the same frequencies in synchronisation from both sites, this is in order to improve coverage in areas that did not get good reception from Sudbury after digitial switch over a few years ago. Therefore retuning will make no difference as John is already receiving a combined signal from both Rouncefall and Sudbury.

John Stone: A signal strength of 100% is too high and can be overloading the tune. Take a look at the article titled "Too much of a good thing" on this website.

StevensOnln1: Thank you for correcting me on the misinformation I gave to the viewer who said that he was wishing to receive Sudbury when Rouncefall was undergoing engineering works. Hopefully, he will see your post, although I shouldn't imagine that he'd cause any permanent material damage with retunes apart from losing any favourites and/or stored recording times, etc. Thanks, again though StevensOnln1, because I don't like giving people incorrect information! Richard, N'ch.

John Stone:

I live in the SS13 3ND postcode area of Essex. I am about 4 miles from the Rouncefall TX.
Can you please tell me why I get good service on also everything.........apart from my local ITV service. Which I choose ITV Anglia as it is best from reg news, along with BBC East (East).

However the service for ITV Anglia from Rouncefall here at my postcode, is Pitsea, Essex, is the worse signal, at many times. All the other channels from this site is 100 per good.

David Hutson:

The digitaluk trade predicition, at the bottom of your post, suggests that reception from Rounvefall Lite transmitter to be poor and variable. The only transmitter shown as giving good reception, subject to local variations of terrain or buildings, is Bluebell Hill, which is a full service transmitter. Rouncefall is at a bearing of 70 degrees East and Bluebell Hill is at 174 degrees East. They both use a Group B or a Wideband aerial with the rods horizontal. You should check the direction of your aerial with the aid of a compass and if it is aimed at about 174 degrees you should tune to Bluebell Hill. ITV Anglia is likely to always be variable and poor as it is not available from Bluebell Hil.

Hi, com 6 is now being transmitted from Rouncefall on UHF channel 37 which incudes Talking Pictures. Com 4 (UHF ch 29) and com 5 (UHF ch 31) will follow in the next few months. Rouncefall will no longer be a "light" transmitter. Sudbury has also moved com 6 to UHF ch 37.
Looking at a few digital tv websites and there doesn't seem any mention of the new line up.
John
