Skelmersdale

I live in Skelmersdale, post code: WN8 9AE T: 01695 725 961 I live on the top floor (third), in a Council Flat, the aerial is located on the side of the building; I have a Bush 24" LED TV with Freeview, and am having problems with the reception. I have done the FREEVIEW RESET PROCEDURE, following all the advice you have given, my TV is receiving Low Signal Level; the picture quality is degraded, and intermitently broken up on the screen. Many of the channel's are unwatchable, the image being completely broken up, and fractured, like the shards of a broken mirror. This has been happening for about a week, and today I have noticed the sound is slightly garbled. There is nothing wrong with the the aerial, because some channel's have good reception, while others do not. The ITV and 5 channel's seem to be the most badly affected. I have done automatic channel scan, first time scan, and reset the TV settings to the default. There is nothing wrong with the TV, otherwise I wouldn't be able to watch the BBC news channel, and Sky news with no problems at all!

Paul Maitland:

Please will you check which transmitter you are tuned to. Skelmersdale transmitter provides the BBC A multiplex on channel 43, the D3&4 multiplex is one channel 46 and the BBC B multiiplex is on channel 40 (Note: the are not the programme numbers [LCNs] but the actual frequency channels.) A Group B aerial is suitable for those channels.

An alternative transmitter available to you is that at Winter Hill. That broadcasts BBC A on channel 50, D3&4 on channel 59, BBC B on channel 54, SDN on channel 58, ARQA on channel 49, ARQB on channel 37, COM7 is on channel 55 and COM8 is on channel 31. A wideband aerial is required for all those channels.

Whislt checking what channels your TV is tuned to, please check the reported signal strengths for each multiplex. Ideally, they should be between 60% and 85%. Less is always a problem, whilst more can give rise to the effects (pixelation, etc) that you are reporting.

Paul Maitland: colinton is not great for reception. As these are councils flats at the bottom you need to get in touch with them.

Zsuzsanna Horak:

You need to provide a full postcode so we can look at the predicted reception in your locale and which transmitter might be the best as you could receive several.
Parts of Up Holland are not well served by the Skelmersdale relay transmitter, some will get better signals from the main Winter Hill transmitter.

Which way is your aerial pointing? If it's pointing 10 degrees E of due N then it's likely to be Skelmersdale. If however is more like ENE (between NE and E) then it will be Winter Hill.

Winter Hill is currently listed for Planned Engineering with "Possible service interruptions". This might be what you are experiencing. Skelmersdale had planned engineering a while ago.

Now, if you retuned at all when the signal was weak or there was no signal due to engineering or faults, this usually just clears all correct tuning, you may even get tuned to weaker signals from a more distant transmitter.
If that's happened, then you will need to try retuning again (maybe more than once) to get your tuning and all programmes back correctly.
