Hi
I am in Se18 ( plumstead area ) I have an aerial in the loft facing south west towards shoots hill (crystal palace is over on the other site which is parley why we have such a poor signal in se18 .
A few years ago i put foil on the wall just behind the aerial which had improved the reception in the loft. Over all the reception has improved recently .
What i have notice is we are also getting transmission from multiplex from BBC Bedfordshire. I can watch the local news on channel 1 ( BBC 1 London south east ) as well as on channel 800 which give me BBC 1 ( look east - Bedfordshire ) ? I could only assume the multiplex for BBC Bedfordshire has much strong signal and is must be bouncing off shooter hill . When we have lost BBC 1 from crystal palace. I can still get a very good picture from Bedfordshire. The multiplex has BBC 1, 2 cbbc ect. On channel 800 to 804.
BBC look east Bedfordshire in on channel 800 and BBC south east London is on channel 1 is because the TV is set to the post code SE18 1RN.

Jimb: No, the Commercial broadcasters in question do not wish to transmit from 1000 or so relay sites like Woolwich. They use about 80 to achieve a 90% coverage of the population. Their interest is viewers to watch advertising that they sell.

Jimb: I think that the digital programme channels you have are likely to be coming from Crystal Palace.
To check, go to the signal strength screen whilst on ITV4 or Film4 and it may well tell you what UHF channel it is tuned to. For Crystal Palace it will be tuned to 29.
The Digital UK Tradeview predictor suggests that you will have a very good chance of receiving from Crystal Palace after switchover:

This doesn't take into account local obstructions (trees, buildings etc) that may affect reception.
If you do decide to have your aerial replaced with one on Crystal Palace, then you will probably best to wait until switchover has completed on 18th April.
The current signals are weaker than they will be after switchover. An aerial that will work now (i.e. that will be sensitive enough to pick up the weaker signals) will be more than is necessary after switchover.

I'v also got UHF 25 & 28 as well.
Looks like you are right I'm picking up Crystal Palace.
Not bad as my VERICAL C BAND Aerial is pointing at the Woolwich Relay transmitter.

So after the much vaunted London digital switchover am left with a pathetic and erratic selection of channels. One day 30 odd and occaisionally more which drop out. No equipment or aerial fault, problem seems to be that the Woolwich transmitter is being left in the dark ages and not upgraded, so 9,000 odd people are being frozen out of a decent freeview service. Left with a difficult choice as only options are Freesat which I believe is Sky related and not keen on anything from them, or a huge extension pole for aerial to reach signal from crystal palace. Reason is that broadcasters reckon their adverts are reaching enough people and cant be bothered with the other 20% ish. Thanks a bunch. Also why no email or phone contact details from Freesat? Any other transmitters to try? Any financial help for wasted freeview TV, initial freesat costs or aerial extension?

nick: This effect is caused by the Commercial broadcasters being allowed to operate in a way that suits them. They transmit from 81 of the largest sites (largest by viewer population) and achieve a 90% coverage of the population. To transmit from the other 1,000 or so small relays would roughly double their costs of transmission whilst only adding 8.5% of the population to their potential viewer base. Clearly they don't think this is worth the outlay. There is no financial help for any viewer who needs to upgrade their aerial or install Freesat in order to receive more channels. If there was, then I think that that money should have been given to the Commercial broadcasters as a subsidy to cover the less profitable areas.
Looking at Digital UK, it would seem that the only transmitter that may give you the full service is Crystal Palace. As your road slopes, some houses are lower than others and therefore may be blocked from getting enough signal from Crystal Palace. So what can and can't be received could vary house by house.

joan josephs: Provided that rain water has not managed to gain access into the termination box on your aerial or coax connected into same, then heavy rain does not really have that much of an effect on Freeview reception, the one exception to this being unless your aerial is facing into tree foliage?
Have you checked with any of your neighbours to ascertain if they are also suffering from zero reception?
