I receive 25 & 28 from Marlborough (4 km) and I also have an aerial for hannington (fringe reception). Both of them exhibit the same problem - relatively low signal quality on the 'commercial' channels. I noted 9&6 for Marlborough and 5&3 for hannington (out of 10).Why is this?

Colin: Marlborough does not transmit the so-called commercial multiplexes at all. You're getting fringe reception from one of the full-service transmitters. This is either going to be Salisbury, which is vertically polarized, or Mendip - horizontally-polarized but more powerful.
For the "Marlborough" aerial the problem is likely to be that it's just not pointing directly at the transmitter that you're picking up, and it may be the wrong polarization and/or the wrong group (Salisbury and Mendip are both Group C/D transmitters). Salisbury is also pretty low power, though substantially higher than Marlborough. Mendip commercial multiplexes are on relatively low power (10kW) until early 2012, and you only receive a small fraction of the signal if the aerial is in the other polarization.
Hannington multiplex C and D are on 10kW at the moment. This will increase to 20kW, to match the other four multiplexes, at the end of June after some other sites, in the Central TV region, switch over. Pre-switchover Mux A requires roughly twice the power, all else being equal, to provide the same coverage area as the other multiplexes. This is because it uses a different mode, which gives a higher bitrate (more capacity) but requires more signal/less interference.
Or, you could be talking about the PSB channels with commercials, on C28. This should be about the same reported quality as on C25, but levels of interference can differ between different channels due to the frequency allocations at other sites (e.g. the site interfering on C28 might not broadcast on C25). You'll have to provide a postcode for me to find out more.

Marlborough
I have two aerials one on hannington and one on Marlborough through an A and E combiner with a m/h amp. I get the PSBs all fine from Marlborough. Hannington is quite weak at times though. WOuld I be better turning the Hannington aerial over to Mendip(it's a group E).Digital UK also suggests rowridge but an E group does not work well on A groups.

Matt James: Mendip PSBs are good but at the moment the commercial muxes are low power, and the prediction is poor or non-existent. Some of them power up on 28 September and change to other channels, which leaves your prediction poor. It reaches final modes and power levels on 28 March 2012 after Rowridge DSO 2, but there will be a number of changes in interference as the switchover programme completes and other transmitters go to full power. The end result will be some muxes good, some variable.
Hannington's results are expected to continue to be variable after switchover, with many of the probabilities lower than they are now.
Rowridge COM muxes clash with Marlborough's channel allocations. This will actually harm your reception of Marlborough and it goes from Good to Poor in April 2012 once they've gone full power after Crystal Palace DSO. It also means there's no prediction for Rowridge COM muxes on either polarization.
I'd wait until next April, see what you actually get from Hannington and how bad the impact on Marlborough is, then decide whether to stick with Hannington or try Mendip instead.

I am situated across the valley from the Marborough transmitter at a distance of about half a mile, and so I should have a very strong and continuous reception.
However, the reception frequently breaks up and an intermittent signal is received. Last night the screen virtually froze for about 5 minutes.
What is causing this, and will the problem ever be rectified?

I looked at the recommendations, and I don't think that is the answer. Firstly, there are no motors or mobile phones close enough, and it happens on both TVs that are at opposite ends of the house.
Any more ideas then?

Tv's at work and home have been losing and regaining signal on the BBC channels on the PSB1 multiplex all weekend and last week. All channels on the PSB2 multiplex don't seem to have been affected. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks.

Simply because the Marlborough transmitter is not up to it. Across the board, in the catchment area of the Marlborough Transmitter, the service has been dropping in and out. Tales from Great Bedwyn to Mildenhall and more of non-service, particularly on Friday morning for people watching the wedding - and no recompense will be offered.
