Steve Flynn: I concur with Dave Lindsay's answer.

Digital UK do suggest that you should get a very good signal for the PSB channels from Crystal Palace, although - because of this channel clash - you are not predicted to be able to get the commercial multiplexes from there.

Steve Flynn: If you do have an issue receiving from Haslemere, you could perhaps reduce the height of your aerial. I see from Streetview that you are on quite a slope and that the Haslemere transmitter can be seen quite clearly sticking out of the trees on the opposite hill. Perhaps you can mount it on one side of the house so that the house acts to block the signal from Crystal Palace.

It shouldn't be the case that you should have to do any of this and you shouldn't have to switch regional programming by using Crystal Palace either.

Mike Dimmick: I understand that the idea is that the PSBs will cover the same area that the four analogue channels did and also that these will be in-group channels, meaning that no adjustment or replacement of aerial should be needed for them. In some cases, aerial replacement is needed for COMs.

Steve Flynn "may" have to change his aerial in order to receive from his local relay so that the COMs can have in-group channels for the London area. Haslemere is a low power transmitter so its coverage isn't that great. There has been two reports in this forum of people in TN35 5EE and 5EF (a couple of miles ENE of Hastings) being predicted as not being able to use their local transmitter (Hastings) when Crystal Palace's COMs come on air, despite the fact that they get an excellent signal now.

Is this a case of "Public Service" being sacrificed in order to satisfy the Commercial operators in and around the Capital?

Group A has been reduced to 10 channels in order for the majority of the 30s to be cleared for the sole use of a number of operators. Had there been a plan where channels are shared to provide best coverage rather than ringfencing some, then there would surely have been no need for the Haslemere/Hastings and Crystal Palace clash.

Hello, I am slightly concerned, you mention that freesat is the only available way of receiving a digital signal. Unfortunately I cannot receive freesat due to a very large oak tree on the train line land at the end of my garden. Freeview doesnt exists, sky is the same problem with the trees, BT who provide TV through broadband say our area isnt covered. It looks like Im heading into a black out next week! Does any one have any suggestions other than whats noted above?

Lynsey A: Regarding what you have mentioned about not being able to receive a satellite signal, is this being said with reference to the result of a possible test that had been carried out, or is there an element of assumption involved?

The only reason I ask is, that although trees and satellite signals (or even to a lesser extent Freeview) do not mix, if a person can stand with their back to a South facing wall (facing slightly to the left) and be able to have a clear view of the Sky when looking up at approximately 25 degrees from the horizontal then they should be able to receive a satellite signal.

Maybe of course you cant, but just thought it worth mentioning as some people are inclined to look at a tree blocking their view and automatically assume it will also do likewise with a satellite signal, not taking into account that the signal doesnt come from the angle to dish happens to be facing but down in an angle from above it.

We had the local aerial man come out to our house, he climbed up the back wall which is indeed south facing, used his gizmo to see whether we could receive a signal off the satellite which as you mention was roughly 25 degrees off to the left and then told us we were the only house in the street which wouldnt be able to receive satellite due to the tree being in the way. The only other option he said was to erect a massive mast (which we agrees would look hideous and silly) and mount the dish on that.

Lynsey A: Thanks for your update on the situation albeit being a rather unfortunate one, but if the installer carried out an on site test and thats what was reported then nothing can really be done about the situation, except that is, hope that possibly through some miracle the tree gets blown down at some time or it suffers some other misfortune. (seems a bit nasty though as it might actually be quite decorative!)

All going well so far, but one question. After 14th March will I be able to get HD as the Haslemere transmitter shows BBCB multiplex? Is so I might buy a Humax box.
