BBC B on the VP aerials should be 4.4W, the same as BBC A and D3&4.

I guess you can't show the HP and VP analogue power levels separately? HP should be 45W and VP 22W according to UK Television Reception Advice . An old IBA booklet had 55/14. (RG47SH)

I live in Claygate Road, Dorking, just behind the Glory Woods, and having just moved into the house from about 1 mile away in North Holmwood I was surprised to find that the tv signal is far worse, despite being higher up on a hill (less channels are received and the signal quickly degrades to become unwatchable, pictures freeze etc and then disappear to be replaced by 'no signal' or 'signal cannot be decoded' messages). I am assuming that the hills and woods in the area may be responsible, despite the house being situated higher up than my old house. The aerial on the house appears to be the old style yagi type, and it is much lower down than neighbouring houses (they are on poles about 6-8 feet higher). Would I benefit from switching to a high gain aerial on a longer pole, and roughly how much might this cost? I don't particularly want to have to get cable or Sky, although the previous owneres had Sky, possibly because of the freeview signal issues, as I am content with the channels offered by Freeview, or would be if I could watch them!!.
Thanks

Mike: Firstly, looking at the aerials on Claygate Road via Streetview, there are a number of transmitters being used. The first thing to do is ensure that the TV is tuned to the transmitter to which the aerial faces.

The Dorking relay transmitter is close by:

mb21 - The Transmission Gallery

It is within the trees and is visible from Streetview. It could be that your TV has tuned to it for PSB channels and it is this that you need to correct.

If you're on another transmitter, then I guess that it's likely to be Crystal Palace or Reigate. The tower blocks may be acting to block these transmitters for some of the houses on Claygate Road.

Crystal Palace and Reigate broadcast all Freeview channels, and Dorking only carries PSB channels. For a list of Freeview services (including which are PSB and which are COM) see:

DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex

Dorking broadcasts on 44, 41 and 47(HD)
Crystal Palace's are 23, 26, 30(HD), 25, 22, 28
Reigate's are 60, 57, 53(HD), 21, 24, 27

These numbers are the UHF channel numbers of each multiplex (mux): PSB1, PSB2, PSB3(HD), COM4, COM5, COM6, respectively. Most receives give UHF/RF channel numbers, but some anti-quated ones only give frequencies in MHz, so you will have to convert. The frequencies are given by this website on each transmitter's page.

Whilst viewing one service from each mux, bring up the signal strength. So check BBC One, ITV, BBC One HD, ITV3, Pick TV and Film4 (these are the first services from each mux).

If you find that the PSBs from Dorking have been tuned in when they should be from Reigate or Crystal Palace, then unplugging the aerial during the middle part of the scan should hopefully do. I say "hopefully" because it might be that the signal from Dorking is that strong that it picks them up with no aerial, for that reason it's probably best to unplug the aerial lead where it goes into your TV/box rather than at the wall socket.

Crystal Palace's channels are in the bottom third of the band, so unplugging at 30% and leaving it out until the end of the scan will do. For Reigate, unplug at 30% and then plug in again at 58% so as to miss out Dorking, in the middle.

Mike: The bearings for the transmitters are:

Crystal Palace 36 degrees, aerial horizontal
Reigate 65 degrees, aerial vertical

There also appear to be a few horizontally-polarised aerials pointing to Heathfield which is at 123 degrees. The Streetview photos were taken before switchover, in March 2009. If I'm correct, number 22 and a few others may have found that PSB3, COM5 and COM6 are unavailable as they are co-channel with Dorking's.

Thanks Dave, I'll have a look and see where my aerial is pointing and go from there. I'm pretty sure it's not pointing towards the dorking relay as that is opposite the front of my house and up the hill behind the trees. I think it's pointing out from the back of the house, sort of south east ish, so possibly it's looking over to the Heathfield array. Once I know where it's looking, I'll see if I can retune using your method above and see if that helps. I have noticed when retuning when I moved in that I ended up with about 5 channels for a couple of days, and then it picked up more; sometimes what I can actually see does vary, not sure why that is but I guess it could just be a poor signal area. Anyway, I'll let you know how I get on - no doubt I'll probably have more questions ;-)

Magnetic field (MF) non-ionizing radiation is a ubiquitous environmental exposure and a serious looming public health challenge. MFs are emitted from both traditional sources that generate low frequency MFs (e.g., power lines, appliances, transformers, etc.) and from emerging sources that generate higher frequency MFs (e.g., wireless networks, smart meter networks, cell towers, wireless devices such as cell phones, etc.). Humans are now widely exposed to MF with ever-increasing intensity, due to the proliferation of MF-generating apparatuses.

The steep increase in MF exposure has renewed concerns about the potential health effects of this invisible, man-made environmental exposure. A recent NIEHS multi-year project conducted by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) has revealed an increased risk of cancer associated with MF non-ionizing radiation exposure1,2. More specifically, the NTP study found that the cancer risk due to MF exposure observed in their experimental animals matched the cancer cell types that had been reported in previous epidemiologic studies in human populations1. This finding has made it more difficult to continue to dismiss possible biological effects of MF exposure. Such outright dismissal could be especially troublesome given the high prevalence of human exposure (with almost everyone being exposed to MF non-ionizing radiation to some degree). This includes vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and young children. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified MF as a possible carcinogen3,4.

Miscarriage is one of the potential adverse health outcomes that are sensitive to MF exposure and also an endpoint that the WHO has recommended to be further studied in the context of MF health effects5. Over the years, a few observational studies in human populations have suggested a possible link between MF exposure during pregnancy and an increased risk of miscarriage6,7,8,9,10,11 including two studies published in 2002 that increased the public awareness of such an association12,13. In addition, one study examined human embryonic tissues to assess the association between EMF exposure and embryonic growth, and observed an increased risk of impaired embryonic bud growth and apoptosis associated with exposure to higher MF level14, providing some direct evidence of adverse biological impact of EMF exposure on embryonic development.

Nevertheless, the association between MF exposure and risk of miscarriage remains largely unknown and overlooked. We conducted this prospective cohort study among a large population of pregnant women to further examine whether exposure to MF non-ionizing radiation during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage.

Peer Reviewed Scientific Research On Wireless Radiation
Published Research Links Cell Phone and Wireless To Health Effects

Cell phones and wireless expose people to a type of microwave radiation also known as radiofrequency radiation or RF-EMF. Peer reviewed research has demonstrated a myriad of adverse biological effects from wireless radiation including reproductive dysfunction, single- and double-stranded DNA breaks, creation of reactive oxygen species, immune dysfunction, stress protein synthesis in the brain, altered brain development, sleep and memory disturbances, and increased brain tumors.

Waiting for high levels of scientific and clinical proof before taking action to prevent well-known risks can lead to very high health and economic costs, as was the case with asbestos, leaded petrol and tobacco. The European Commission
These effects have occurred at wireless radiation exposure levels hundreds of times lower than presently legal international limits. These effects have occurred after exposure to devices that are government approved and legally sold to the public.

Scientific data on the biological effects of radiofrequency indicate the immediate need for a precautionary approach to protect the public. Conclusive proof is not necessary. The research has accumulated enough to provide strong evidence that low levels are not safe.

Below we have a short summary and if you click on the drop down tab- a list of scientific references as documentation. These are a small example of the numerous studies that have been done.

We also recommend these research compilations:

The Bioinitiative Report 2012

Annotated Bibliography of Scientific Papers Finding Evidence of Harm from Cell Phone Radiation Exposure Published between August, 2016 and July, 2018 Joel M. Moskowitz, Ph.D. School of Public Health University of California, Berkeley which contains 92 papers published in scientific journals during the last two years that report evidence of harm from cell phone radiation exposure.

PowerWatch: 1,670 Peer-Reviewed Scientific Papers on Electromagnetic Fields and Biology or Health

This list is a compilation of citations for 1,670 peer-reviewed scientific papers about electromagnetic fields (EMF) published in scientific journals from 1979 through 2018. The list includes all papers that PowerWatch published on its website as of October 11, 2018.

5G: Great risk for EU, U.S. and International Health! Compelling Evidence for Eight Distinct Types of Great Harm Caused by Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Exposures and the Mechanism that Causes Them by Dr. Martin Pall

Scientific Evidence Documenting Increased Cancer From Exposure

The research evidence indicates that long term use of cell phones and wireless increase the risk of cancer risk. Independent longitudinal research has consistently shown that heavy (30 min/day) cellphone users have an increased risk of brain cancer. Such research lead to the World Health Organization's International Agency for the Research on Cancer to classify this radiation as a Class 2 B Possible Human Carcinogen in 2011. Since 2011, the evidence has increased.

A disservice has been done in inaccurately depicting the body of science, which actually indicates that there are biological effects from the radiation emitted by wireless devices, including damage to DNA, and evidence for increased risk of cancer and other substantial health consequences...The public the world over has been misled by this reporting. Dr. Ronald B. Herberman
Dr. Hardell's research showed that adults who started using cell or cordless phones as teenagers had an 8-fold higher risk of brain cancer on the side of their head where they held the phone. A French study also found increased brain cancer in long term cell phone users. To date, the only published study of children's risk of brain cancer from cell phone use found more than a 2-fold risk after >2.8 years of use (from billing records), combined with a statistically significant trend of increasing risk with increasing years of use.

In 2015 Lerchl et al published an important replication study which confirms that wireless acts as a tumor promoter. In this important study, lymphomas and tumors of the lungs and livers in exposed animals were significantly higher. The wireless exposure was at low to moderate exposure levels well below exposure limits for the users of mobile phones. This research is significant in that it used a larger group of mice and replicated tumor-promoting effects shown in a 2010 study.

Neurotoxic Effects
Experimental research shows chronic exposure to wireless reduces brain cells and causes brain cell death in the memory and learning centers of the brain. Cell phone radiation has also been shown to alter brain activity in humans. In 2011, NIH research found just 50 minutes of a wireless transmitting device (cell phone) next to the brain increases glucose in the part of the brain most exposed. Preliminary 3G and 4G research has further shown that non-thermal levels of this radiation alter the brain's electrical activity.

Cognition and Impaired Memory
Yale University research found prenatally exposed pups had impaired memory, increased hyperactivity, and altered brainsconsistent with a growing literature. Many studies have now demonstrated that wireless signals can damage cognitive abilities such as learning, memory, attention, and reaction times.

We have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb, said Dr. Hugh Taylor of Yale Medical School. The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.

Behavioral Issues
Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposures and behavioral issues in children (and experimental test subjects). For example, a recent study showed a significant dose-response relationship between the number and duration of voice calls made on cell phones and ADHD risk among children who were also exposed to lead in their environment. Exposure to cell phones prenatally and postnatally is associated with behavioral difficulties such as emotional and hyperactivity problems.

Genotoxic Effects
Radiation at extremely low levels (0.0001 the level emitted by the average digital cellular telephone) caused heart attacks and the deaths of some chicken embryos...independent, third-party peer-reviewed studies need to be conducted in the U.S. to begin examining the effects from radiation on migratory birds and other trust species. Willie Taylor, US Department of the Interior in his February 2014 letter to Mr. Eli Veenendaal of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, U.S. Dept. of Commerce.

Studies at non-thermal (no measurable temperature change) levels of microwave exposures show chromosomal instability, altered gene expression, gene mutations, DNA fragmentation, and DNA structural breaks. Genetic mutations and cellular damage can potentially contribute to cancer growth. Strong effects from microwaves have been found in stem cells. Since stem cells are more active in children, researchers are concerned that children are at increased risk.

While electromagnetic fields may not directly damage DNA, research indicates they could set into motion a series of biological impacts that result in genetic damage.

A 2015 experimental study found that 2.4 GHz (Wi-Fi radiation) can alter expression of some of the miRNAs, and the study's authors concluded that long-term exposure of 2.4 GHz RF may lead to adverse effects such as neurodegenerative diseases originated from the alteration of some miRNA expression and more studies should be devoted to the effects of RF radiation on miRNA expression levels.

Dr. Lai analyzed research since 2006 and found there are more papers reporting effects from exposure than no effect: New radiofrequency studies report that 65% of genetic studies show effects and 35% do not show effects.

Ally: Retuning will not fix a signal fault as all you are doing is deleting your tuning information and searching for the same signal again, which can often make the problem worse. If you provide a full postcode we can see what the predicted signal strength is at your location and may be able to offer further advice.
