@Parsley,

Hi, I've just spotted this discussion so it's probably too late to help you but; I have a horizontally polarised 18 element yagi pointed at Winter Hill from SK23 9SE, yes Eccles Pike is in the way, yes I need a cheap distribution amp, but it works and I have full Freeview,

I self installed (bought the twig on spec) and so did my next door neighbour on the basis of my success.
I would imagine that it will depend on exactly where you are ;)

@Kim. Thanks for your message. I see you are the other side of Eccles Pike. At my location on the southerly side of Cracken Edge there is no chance of a direct link to Winter Hill. I went for a satellite dish in the end and am very happy with the Freesat service.

Yes, I think you'd need a very long bendy aerial to "see" round the corner from there :D

We have Freesat too, best of both worlds.

ROERT BARNFIELD: You are NOT paying for something that doesn't work, as the programme channels referred are not connected any way with the licence fee as they are being broadcast for profit making purposes paid for by the advertisers, and the only reason you were able to receive these channels in your previous location was simply because that the advertisers had calculated that the returns expected from the number of households within the transmitters coverage area would greatly exceed the contribution they have to make towards the running costs of the service.

This on course being the reverse in areas of lower population such as your own hence why they are not being transmitted.

ROERT BARNFIELD: The reason you have any TV channels now is because those broadcasters have an obligation to provide a "public service". One of those broadcasters is the BBC, to which your Licence Fee goes.

The fact that the Commercial broadcasters don't wish to transmit from Ladder Hill and over 1,000 other similar relay sites and is therefore unavailable to those viewers does not mean that the BBC should receive less revenue from those viewers.

The point is that there is now a two-tier system and two types of broadcaster: Public Service and Commercial. The latter exist purely for profit and serving a small proportion of the population, per viewer, is much greater. For that reason they aren't interested.
