J Loyd: Freeview is not a scam or a fraud. If moving something causes you to loose signal then you have problem with your aerial system, such as a loose cable, bad connection somewhere or the aerial itself could have been damaged over the many years it has likely been in place, or you are trying to use an unsuitable indoor aerial in a location that doesn't have a strong signal. You aren't going to be able to take someone to court because of a problem with your aerial system or cabling.

I have roof aerial with line of sight to Moel - y - Parc Freeview, two cables suppling two TVs. serving two rooms, one I have a problem with picture breaking up on BBC 4. ITV 4 and Drama on one tv but not on 2nd, have checked and when one is breaking up other is perfect. I have been told I need new aerial, but do not understand why one is perfect. Any suggestions please.

Philip Clancy:

You need to check the signal strengths of both the good TV and the one having poor reception. It is possible that your signal strength may be too high, or too low, for one of the TV sets - the tuners do vary in sensitivity.

Ideally you want both sets to have signal strengths in the 60% to 85% range. Higher than that can cause picture break up, loss of sound or even a report of 'no signal' because the tuner is getting too much signal. If it is less than that range then that can cause similar problems and could be due to a poor connection or a fault in the way the signals are being split between the two sets.

Is the split done using a passive splitter, with no power requirement, or an active one needing a power suppy?

Are you getting the transmissions intended for a Welsh audience? You are closer to the Winter Hill transmitter, a distance of 31 km and bearing of 42 degrees, yet Moel-y-parc is 39 km away at a bearing of 236 degrees. If you are getting the correct local versions (English) for your area then you are probably using Winter Hill. Check what channels (not programme numbers) the BBC and ITV services are on.

Philip Clancy: What signal strength and quality are you getting on the channels that are breaking up? If you swap the TVs over, does the same problem still happen in the same room?

Can anyone tell me why the Moly Y Parc transmitter cannot broadcast Granada regional signals to the Wirral as the coastal area along the river Dee cannot pick up signals from any other transmitter?
After all the Storeton transmitter broadcasts the welsh service to the opposite bank of the Dee from the Granada region.

Roger N: Moel-Y-Parc is a Welsh transmitter which is primarily intended to serve North Wales (although it does have large areas of overlap coverage in England). The Welsh muxes broadcast from Storeton are to provide infill coverage for areas that do not get good coverage from any other transmitter, rather than to provide an additional region. The coverage maps suggest that most of The Wirral can receive ITV Granada from either Winter Hill or Storeton, but if you provide a full postcode we can check the predicted coverage at your location.
