Ian Turpin - Either way you will be on safe ground as far as the survival of the platforms are concerned. You can get a modern LCD/LED TV with both tuners onboard. A "Freesat" or "Freeview" PVR will give you more flexibility.
If You are served by a "Freeview Lite" transmitter then "Freesat" is the better option.
Although "Freesat" is a relatively new platform - not a Broadcaster as such - but providing an EPG it is backed by the BBC and ITV and it's more than meeting expectations as far as take up is concerned.

lesnicol: thanks very much for that information. I think the best bet is to go for a tv with both sorts of tuner which, although it might mean more initial expense, will "future-proof" me.

Transmitter engineering: We are receiving problems with our BBC CHANNELS on a regular basis that it blacks out the screen and a No Signal panel comes up. Often this is in the morning and if we are waiting things like Homes Under the Hammer etc are missed out or partly missed or interrupted. Most regularly it happens on a Friday morning. We only have a roof Ariel and not a disc or Sky Digibox. Can you help with some answers for this problem. Last night we lost most of One Show and Spotlight News.

We are continually plagued with poor signal or no signal from the relay transmitter in Tiverton. Please can you tell us why we have to put up with such poor service in this day and age.

Roslyn Pike: If the problem is continual then it is most likely to be something at your end. A long running fault with the transmitter would result in many complaints, however there has only been one other post on the Tiverton transmitter page this year. Have you checked for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV?

We live in EX16 6RX. In the past few days, our terrestrial(?) TV reception has become garbled. We have pulled everything out ( power, aerial etc) and reconnected them to no avail. Any thoughts?

Yes, it's current weather conditions providing some Tropospheric Ducting/Temperature inversion which allows interfering signals from distant transmitters in Europe or the UK to be received which degrade your own signal if you are in a weaker signal area.
I'm afraid it's the last thing your should do, trying to reset everything/retune when you have pixellated pictures or no signal - whether it be due to transmitter faults/maintenance or weather conditions. In most cases it will just clear your correct tuning and as you won't know when signals become adequate/normal you may have to retune several times to restore normal tuning.
If your aerial has its rods (or squashed Xs) horizontal pointing at compass bearing 114 degrees (~ESE) for the Stockland Hill transmitter, then the commercial multiplexes may be weaker than the main BBC/ITV/C4/C5 ones, but it all depends where the interference comes from, it's usually frequency dependent and doesn't often affect all multiplexes.
if the rods are vertical pointing at compass bearing 230 degrees (~SW) at the Tiverton relay, you may not be as vulnerable but will only get the main PSB multiplexes and not the commercial ones as those aren't broadcast from this "light" relay transmitter.
