KMJ,Derby: How could this be made to work in practice?

Back in the days of four channel analogue, those in the King's Lynn area could have a Belmont aerial and King's Lynn aerial. They could be diplexed together, say 21 to 35 and 37 to 69 respectively. This would allow BBC2 and C4 from Belmont to be watched and BBC1 and Anglia from King's Lynn to be viewed.

Channel 5 analogue from Belmont was on Ch56 which meant that people with this setup could not receive it, for the same reason as they won't be able to get Arq A and Arq B (Ch53 and Ch60) because they are on channels above those of King's Lynn. The same was true of all but one digital multiplex prior to switchover.

So what would the professional solution be?

Is the answer to install a second aerial on Belmont for its services that are above those of King's Lynn? Could this be diplexed with the current King's Lynn aerial where the split is something like 21 to 50 (KL aerial) and 52 to 69 (second Belmont aerial)?

Of course, the reason for two Belmont aerials is because SDN is on Ch30 whereas the other two COMs are on 53 and 60.

Why is this? Why aren't they all in the same group?

From what I can see, the likely answer is because Ch31 to Ch35 (those at the top end of Group A) have been cleared so as to sell them off for the exclusive use of a new licencee or licencees. Had these channels still been available, then I guess that Belmont wouldn't be using two channels that are out of its analogue (exc Channel 5) group.

Surely a bit of forward planning would mean that new services could be fitted in, but by utilising different channels in different areas, just as all other services do.

The fact that this has not happened means that people like Barry now suffer unnecessary inconvenience and expense.

Dave Lindsay: Happy New Year. As you rightly say the reason for so many transmitters having out of group frequency allocations for the COM muxes is down to the frequency shortage created by the removal of frequencies from the present plan for auction in the Digital Dividend. Waltham and Belmont were at the bottom of the list when allocations were made for the COM mux frequencies, priority being given to Crystal Palace, Sutton Coldfield and Emley Moor to have in-group frequencies allocated from the few that were available/ not used for PSB muxes in overlapping areas. The solution you suggest for linking aerials to receive Belmont and Kings Lynn signals is probably the cheapest way for domestic installations. A neater but more expensive method using filters for the individual mux frequencies would be more likely on, say, a communal aerial. Worth noting: Mux BBCA from Kings Lynn changes frequency to C40 in 2013, so remains within the range of the diplexers, however Waltham will use C49 for Mux BBCA instead of C61, creating another problem for viewers who have chosen to diplex Waltham signals into their aerial set-up if the crossover channel is between 50 and 52. jb38 could probably give more information on professional solutions to this problem.

I have just returned from overseas after 5 years and have gone to plug in my tv to get a reception and there is nothing.

My tenants used sky so go the tv through the sky dish. Do I need to change my aerial over to a digitial aerial or would it already be a digital aerial. It was installed in the house in 2001 and I left for abroad in 2005

Vicky: There is no such thing as a "digital" aerial, just an aerial which is suitable for reception of digital transmissions in the location in question. Depending on the transmitter being received it might be necessary to use a different aerial to cover all the frequencies in use if reception of all six muxes is required. Otherwise an aerial that gave good reception on analogue transmissions will be suitable for reception of at least the PSB muxes in most areas. In your particular area if you use the Belmont transmitter you will need a different aerial for reception of ArqA and ArqB muxes. If you give more information with regard to your location, preferably a postcode, a check can be made on predicted reception and further advice given. If your TV does not have a suitable tuner built in you will need to use a Freeview box to receive DTT transmissions, or alternatively a satellite box connected to the dish will receive the free to air satellite channels with no subscription needed.

Vicky: The aerial is most likely pointing NW to Belmont, with W to Waltham as the most likely alternative. Check that the cable is continuous from the aerial to the BT vision box, that is, if it goes through the loft the cables have not been left disconnected after a splitter was removed, or the cable does not go to any plastic boxes along its length which could indicate that a powered splitter was in use, the power supply now being absent or turned off. Also, if it is not brand new, did you do a factory reset of the BT vision box to clear the memory of all data before scanning for channels?

Paul Ketteridge: If you are receiving from Tacolneston or Waltham, then they are undergoing engineering work which may mean reduced signal strength.

Retuning is a waste of time as TVs store which frequency each signal is on and providing this is correct, retuning can't make the signal stronger!

A. Nimmo: The TV Licence is not a subscription and does not entitle you to reception of any particular channels. The only broadcasters that receive funding from the TV Licence are the BBC and S4C, whose channels are available from every transmitter in the UK (Welsh transmitters only for S4C). Other channels are provided by commercial broadcasters and have no requirement to serve any particular location. Perhaps you could expand on your comment in more suitable language (given that the contributors to this website have no connection with any broadcaster and offer help/advice out of their own good will). A full post code would allow us to see what your predicted coverage is and which transmitters are available at your location.

If you have no satellite signal, see Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'

If you have other problems, please provide a full (not partial) postcode (or preferably enter it in box at the top right) and indicate where if aerial is on the roof, in the loft or elsewhere.
