My neighbours and I have been experiencing signal strength fluctuations for at least a couple of weeks now, resulting in channel losses and poor signal quality. One day everything is fine. The next day the majority of channels are poor or gone.

We all have roof based aerials and have never had any problems before. What is going on?

Neil Garrod:

I can't find any reports of transmitter problems at present, and there's been no Planned Maintenance this week.
Have you had problems this week? Or has it just been in previous weeks? There might have been Planned Engineering in previous weeks but I can't confirm that one way or another.

If you and your neighbours continue to have problems, ring the Freeview Advice line on 0808-100-0288, or if you have atwitter account @FreeviewAdvice

ALAN ASTON:

As you haven't given any indication of how long this has been happening, it's difficult to say!
As per the post before yours, the transmitter is subject to Planned Engineering which may be the reason.

There has been quite variable weather related Tropospheric Ducting in recent days which can affect reception because of interference being received from more distant transmitters in Europe or the UK - not all multiplexes are necessarily affected.

You may normally have problems with co-channel interference on C25 but as you haven't given a full postcode, it's impossible to comment on that.

ALAN ASTON:

Just to add, if your aerial is pointing in a southerly direction, the Preseli transmitter may be receivable within its beamwidth, so you could try a manual tune of C42 for the SDN multiplex, but reception may be variable.

annwen hughes:

I'm afraid it's down to current weather conditions -
They have been causing Tropospheric Ducting affecting much of the south coast and southern parts of the country on Saturday and now extending into the Midlands and North of the country through Sunday including East Anglia, now currently affecting Wales and England. This causes interfering signals from distant transmitters in Europe or the UK to affect reception of your wanted signals. This can periodically last, seconds, minutes and sometimes much longer - Do NOT Retune.
There is nothing you can do about this apart from wait for conditions to change, or use online streaming if available.

IF you did retune, you'd be best manually retuning the UHF channels for your transmitter as detailed at the top section of this page.

The BBC and Freeview have issued warnings -
High pressure weather conditions impacting TV & Radio services - from 07 October | Help receiving TV and radio
High pressure could affect reception across parts of the UK this week | Freeview
