Chris SE. I have only just logged in. Thank you for your message. No, my tv is not 'smart.' Do you know why channels have to do this and in the process lose much of their audience? What is the point?

nick horrex: It's down to money. Broadcasting a channel on Freeview costs millions of pounds a year, whereas streaming a channel via the internet costs a fraction of that and is a more affordable way for smaller channels to reach relatively low numbers of viewers.

Steve, so if you have the pc linked to a tv and are watching Al jazeera on whatever channel it is now, that is nothing to do with freeview?

nick horrex: Streaming channels in the 260-299 range broadcast a portal on one of the Freeview multiplexes, which gives the TV the URL (address) to connect to and play the stream. The TV needs an internet connection, it doesn't need to be linked to a PC or laptop.
