Paul: Before the main transmitting aerial was replaced, there were panels on top of it. These were used, the best I can tell, to increase the power-handling capability of the main aerial. The first four analogue channels and the six multiplexes were all combined onto the cylinder.

Multiplexes 1 and B also have supplementary panels below the main aerial, on one corner of the mast. Channel 5 analogue has its own skew-fire panels further down.

Source: U.K. Television Stations (UHF Digital System) and Former U.K. Television Stations (UHF Analogue System) showing muxes 2, A, C and D at an average height of 289m above sea level (AOD) and muxes 1 and B at an average 277m, and BBC1/2/ITV/C4 at 289m. Photographs at mb21 - The Transmission Gallery - 277m is actually in the middle of the FM radio panels immediately below the main antenna.

The mux 1 and B panels were moved down closer to the C5 array in order to fit the new reserve aerial, which took over services in late 2009 to allow the old cylinder to be replaced: http://tx.mb21.co.uk/gallery/oxford/oxford06.php

The
new aerial was fitted in February 2010: mb21 - The Transmission Gallery . When the broadcasters tried to put it into service it caught fire, and had to be replaced.

The new, new aerial was fitted in August 2010 and went into service towards the end of the year. As far as we know, all services (except C5 analogue) are combined onto this one transmission aerial, just as before. At switchover all six high-power digital multiplexes will be combined onto this one aerial. (RG47SH)

I live in Buckingham. I bought a new Panasonic TV and a new Sony DVD/Recorder in July 2010. I had a new aerial installed. They seemed to work perfectly until the end of Dec when the DVD stopped picking up the signal from all channels except BBC1 and BBC2. The TV works perfectly when the DVD is switched off but as soon as the DVD is switched on the signal goes from the TV. The DVD has been tested in Milton Keynes and has shown it works perfectly. Do I have to wait till Sept 28 before I can use my new DVD?! What's it all about?

Shirley: Can you tell me the make and model of the "DVD". I'm not sure if you just mean a cheap DVD player or a Freeview+ DVD recording device.

From what you've said I would return "the DVD" to the store where you got it and ask for one that works properly.

Dear Briantist, The DVD is a Sony RDRDC100B DVD REC/HDD 160GB bought at John Lewis MK. I reported the problem to them and have had two different electronics repair centres, both recommended by John Lewis, check the DVD over. Both have said "No faults found. Suspect problems are caused by Poor Signal"

Briantist, the aerial goes into the DVD at the "In" socket and the second aerial lead comes out the "Out" socket and is connected into the TV. A friend suggested I try using a Scart connection between the TV and DVD instead of the HMD1 to see if it makes a difference.

Shirley: If you could JUST connect the aerial to the DVD only, and then JUST the HDMI from the DVD to the TV.

Then do this My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice to the DVD.

Briantist, we seem to have made progress with the scart connection! The DVD seems to be picking up most of the channels, TV and Radio. I,m going to leave it now while I,m ahead, but thanks for your help and I will follow your advice if, or when, it all goes wrong again.
