When the service seemed to be back to normal I sent another email to say so and to thank my correspondent (at itv.com) for his help. I've just had a reply, which says, in part

"Im very pleased to hear that you can now access all services once again.

As previously advised, there was no problem with the signal leaving our Transmission centre. However, as I hope youll understand, Im unable to discuss further details."

John Pilkington:
Interesting. Worth noting the wayb they responded talks about the signal 'leaving our Transmission centre' - which is nothing to do with the Waltham transmitter, nor any other. The transmitters are not operated by ITV but a separate business and it is they who control how the transmitter works and is set up.
That all suggests there was a problem with how it was set, your email prompted ITV to contact their transmission contractor who probably corrected what had been set wrongly (at least I suspect so) and hence the problem is resolved. Not by ITV but I suggest you were instrumental in making it happen. Well done and I'm sure several viewers in the East Midlands are now a lot happier. (I used to live in the Vale of Belvoir [pronounced like beaver] and worked in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and parts of South Yourkshire fo some years.).

Is anyone having a problem with Sony PVR's/TV's on Waltham channel 49 tonight?

My HX995 seems to be without a signal, yet is on 83% strength, and flicks up a normal signal for perhaps a second. Its not the cable or the aerial, since the Goodmans digibox is running fine at around 65%, and they are split.

The only thing I can think of is the extreme sensitivity of the tuner, and its having a problem tonight, perhaps with a tempreture inversion. But why it hasn't done the same thing to the cheap digibox, goodness knows. - See how it is tomorrow.

If anyone is having a similar problem with a PVR, at least you'll know its not just you.

john: Since there are be loads of us with similar problems, its a Sony thing, and seems to be HXD models from 6 to 3 years ago. Someone mentioned software, which makes sense, but there is nothing on the Sony twitter feed, etc (did I expect anything!).

Hopefully, it will get back to normal soon, but when I'm in work sunday, I'll see what up generally. One of the other blokes has exactly the same machine, so I'll what happened to his.

I know Dave Lindsay has got a similar machine, but no news from him yet, so it might be regional?

I'm so glad I persisted in searching the internet and found this site.

I am on Waltham transmitter and sometime yesterday early evening, I lost freeview through my Sony RDR-HXD870.

I am not sure a firmware upgrade will do anything as I am pretty sure I did mine a couple of years ago and the latest firmware is dated 2010.

Therefore, I cannot see how this could suddenly affect anything if it has been working fine for 2 years and, to be honest, I am not that keen on re-doing the firmware upgrade whilst I cannot get a picture.

Is it possible that 4G has been ramped up on Waltham or something as I have read 4G can cause problems?

"My HX995 seems to be without a signal, yet is on 83% strength, and flicks up a normal signal for perhaps a second."

Exactly the same issue as I have. It sometimes plays a second or so of image and picture and cuts out.

The real shame about all this is if it continues, I ain't going to be able to record the 2nd Brit to win the Tour de France for posterity. Gutted!

Sorcha. Only time will tell.

It is not an issue with the DVD recorder as far as I can tell but I am NO expert.

I have checked and mine is definitely on the current firmware version 1.70 and as been for a year or three.

It's probably best to just patiently wait for an expert on here to come up with suggestions.

As I say, I am no expert but I cannot see how tropospheric issues could affect a signal through a DVD recorder but not affect Freeview through a Digital TV.

And having read a fair bit online this morning, I am awaiting confirmation from anyone in the know as to what changes could solely affect Sony machines.

It makes no sense to me.
