I live in Merthyr Tydfil but only get the basic freeview channels. If I upgraded to the strongest available digital aerial could I receive more channels from another transmitter such as Wenvoe ? And, what is the self help transposer in Pentrebach which is very close to me. How would that help and what would I need to do ?

Many thanks.

Eran Elliott: Without more precise information about your location, preferably a postcode in order to do a predicted reception check, it is not possible to give detailed advice. However it is fair to say that even if you are fortunate in being able to receive signals direct from Wenvoe it is most unlikely that reception of the COM muxes would be possible due to the re-use of the frequencies for the low power, but nearby, relay at Trefechan. This would most likely block reception of any signals from Wenvoe on the COM frequencies. A similar situation exists for anyone in the locality who is able to receive signals from Mendip, as in this case the relay at Treharris transmits the PSB muxes on the same frequencies as are used at Mendip for the COM muxes.

kerry: Properties in your area would appear to be connected into a communal aerial system, should your TV or box be connected into such a system then the problem is really out with your control, as its really in the domain of the properties maintenance department.

I should say though, that the communal aerials fitted on the properties in the area are seen to be facing towards the Wenvoe transmitter, and although being only 4 miles away, this transmitter is not indicated as providing the best reception due to the signal path from same being blocked relatively close to your location, Mendip being far in a way superior in this respect by having a clear line of sight between the transmitter and your apartment block, of course, that is should the location referred to apply? as its fully appreciated that a post code can cover a number of properties in an area.

By the way, are any of your neighbours suffering from similar problems with reception?

jpreece: Hi. Basically, no, you won't.

As you can't get a signal from one of the "full service" Freeview transmitters, if you want more money then Freesat is the way to go.

Have a look at https://ukfree.tv/chan…esat for the channel lists.

jpreece: Extremely doubtful.

There's no such thing as a "digital aerial" as against "analogue aerial".

What you would be trying to do is receive from Wenvoe, as it carries all the channels. However, even though it's only 12 miles away, you're a long way off seeing it, as this terrain plot shows:

Terrain between ( m a.g.l.) and (antenna m a.g.l.) - Optimising UK DTT Freeview and Radio aerial location

All in all, think you're better considering Freesat.

Chris: Hi. My name is Anthony. I have a similar problem in that a few weeks ago we lost a lot of channels to our freeview box. Our nearest transmitter is Wenvoe and we live in Llanedeyrn, Cardiff. We can get BBC 1,2 3 & 4 and some others like Yesterday, Drama, Pick, ITV3, etc.
No ITV1 Channel 4 or 5. and loads of others are gone.
It sounds like the same problem you had, although the lost channels are different.
Did you find out what the problem was?
