After a disastrous Wednesday night on which neither program we had set to record starting at 21.00 recorded anything watchable, Thursday was brilliant. All channels working well. Tonight, HD channels are OK as usual, but on standard definition it is a different story. Channels 1 and 2 are fine, with signal strengths of 76% and quality of 80% steady.

On channels 3, 4 and 5 however there are no pictures, Not broken, zilch. Signal strength on these channels is still around 75% but quality fluctuates rapidly between 10% and 50% As MikeB suggested, freesat is looking tempting. But as a former physicist, I am very curious as to what can cause such variations between different evenings.

Been having poor signal quality recently, tried a rescan and found 2 new digital channels in area CH 33 (Multiplex TSID 107c,ONID233a) and CH 36 (Multiplex TSID2011,ONID233a). Can someone throw any light on where I am picking these up from. Signal strength is good with little bit errors.

Ian Young:

the best source is the Digital UK Coverage Checker at Digital UK - Coverage checker Put in your post code and house number. Then scroll down to see which transmitters are receivable at your location and scroll down again to look at the channels used by those transmitters.

The listings also give the compass directions for the available transmitters so you should check that your aerial is pointing correctly to the preferred transmitter. Note that aerials have 'side lobes' that also receive signals but not as strongly as tha main direction, so one of the other possible transmitters may be on a bearing to be received via a side lobe.

You should also check the signal strengths of all your multiplexes as that is more important than the quality reported by the TV. You ideally need betyween 60% and 85% as too little signal as well as too much sigfnal; can cause reception problems, see the article 'Too much of a good thing' on this website at https://ukfree.tv/article…d_f.

Lochwinnoch transmitter has been off tonight since about 22.35 It is still off right now at 22.45 and I am about to turn off the TV. All available channels seem to be affected according to a sample I took across the range including Standard and HD channels. Update, it came back on at 22.46.

Ken Johnsn:

The Lochwinnoch transmitter is a relay of the Darvel main transmitter which is currently listed for Planned Engineering. It's possible that work may have caused the interruption as I can find no fault listed at this time.
