I asked my Mum to check 719 and she says that it is 'smooth' radio ?
She says we get our signal from bluebell hill.

It is hard to think that it is the machine as you would think it would lose ALL channels.

She did a re-scan just now....... 16.55pm Weds and it said at the end........
BBC1 IS BACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK YaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaY
BBC2 is back
Yaaaaaaaaaaay

Though this does not mean that at certain time of the day it will not dissapear again... But she will not rescan again in case of losing it again and it praying that whatever the problem is - Is now sorted out?

Many Thanks

Sue : Pleased to see that your Mums BBC channels have reappeared. It would however have been interesting to know if others in the area were also affected by the problem, because if they were, then that would have eliminated any possibility of the problem being down to an intermittent fault having developed in your Mums TV/box, something which cannot be completely discounted, as although the signal path from the Bluebell Hill mast (@1.6 miles) is seen to suffer from a line-of-sight obstruction at approximately 0.3 miles prior to her location, it appears as being only of a minor nature, whereby the signal should (in theory anyway) still be exceeding strong in the area.

Re-retuning. This should never be carried out unless a message to this effect has appeared on the screen, because if a signal vanishes due to a glitch at the transmitter, it will "always" return of its own accord provided that its not wiped from the tuners memory. i.e: all that's required is to try (select) it now and again.

About 3 weeks ago, middle of March 2016, the BBC channels started to disappear on FREEVIEW, sometimes pixelated, sometimes completed gone with the message "no service". The problem is worse in the evening, the stations often returning in the morning.
We borrowed a second TV which suffered the same problem.

The digital aerial and cable are about 10 years old, newly installed when the digital service changed over.

About 3 months ago we moved the aerial into the loft, to reduce risk of wind damage and repeated need to go on top of the roof. It had worked perfectly since then.

We are several miles from Bluebell Hill (ME5 8PX). The aerial is large, 11 elements on the front, and 6 reflectors behind.

We are at a loss to say what has changed. Some posts mention weather problems, but hard to believe it is due to atmospheric problems lasting 3 weeks.

It is confusing that is worked well for so long.
Presumably there is no change to transmitter (power?)?
Cable or aerial deterioration is possible but not so easy to believe and prefer not to change the items unnecessarily.

Thanks for any advice.

Mick - My Mums loss of BBC also happened in the evening and was fine again by the next morning.... Very curious..... As - You would think if it was anything with the equipment all the channels would have been missing/altered......

I guess time will tell on this one.... I live closer to the bluebell hill antenna than my Mother and my BBC channels are all fine on freeview....... Though I do not watch much TV so I only knew there was a problem whren my Mum phoned me and asked me to turn it on and see if I had BBC or not......

Sue,

Smooth should be on 718 and is transmitted on a different MultiPlex (a group of stations) and therefore it is almost impossible for Smooth to be on 719. I would guess your mum accidently pressed 718 which is where Smooth should be. Your mum is not alone in having an odd ball problem; quite a few seem to get them. Sometime they disappear without ever knowing why they came or went and sometimes you have to live with it or find a work around. I don't remember all these odd ball problems with analogue TV.

Update from 2 posts ago.
Bit the bullet, changed the cable and aerial, no difference.

Tried moving direction of aerial slightly, can get either BBC or 'other' channels, not both sets at same time.
Freeview 10 and 20 are least cooperative of non-BBC channels, they pixel then disappear first.

Flummoxed.....

My Mum turned her freeview on this evening and BBC channels are gone again! This happens most evenings by the seems of it - intermittently.....

BBC1 2 and 4 are all affected - Like Mick we are at a loss to see why this is happening.......

To be honest - I feel that someone must be doing something - I live closer to bluebell hill than my mother - I am not affected at all (just checked lol)

Very weird

Sue: Purely out of curiosity, should the latest situation remain the same, it would be of interest to know if your Mum is able to get BBC Solent on 719, as this radio programme is broadcast on the same Mux transmitter as BBC1/2 etc.
