Is anyone else having trouble getting a good picture from the Lancaster transmitter? My picture keeps breaking up. Have tried new aerial and all cables and still problem. Was fine a few weeks ago.

I have a Panasonic TV with built in Freeview HD .I have had the TV for 18 months and have been receiving HD channels with no problem. I have just noticed since last week that the HD channels starting with channel 50 have vanished from my channel list. I have re-tuned the TV several times but they are still missing. I have a 10 strength signal and am a bit confused.

Mark Jolly: If you could previously receive the HD channels OK and are receiving them from from a transmitter that has recently switched over to high powered operation, then it could be that you are now receiving an excessively high level of signal and which is blocking reception, this always showing up first on the HD channels.

If you can borrow a set top aerial then try that, the signal might not be good but you are only really interested in if you can get a signal at all, and if you do then you will require to purchase an attenuator to place in line with the TV's aerial socket.

Needless to say that if you have any type of booster on your aerial system then by-pass it.

You should also have provided a post code (or one from nearby!) with a query of this sort, as that would enable the signal levels expected at your location to be verified.

What is the total height of this transmitter above sea level ie:- the bit that transmits the signal, not just the overall height of the mast. I'm hoping to try access the signal over here on Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness

Clivo: The figure is given above underneath each multiplex: 180m

This information is sourced from Ofcom:

Ofcom | Supplementary licence documents in relation to DSO

This terain plotter may be useful:

Terrain - shows radio profile between two UK sites to optimise you DTT, Freeview, DAB or analogue TV reception

Also it might be useful to be aware that Lancaster's COMs are 1kW whereas PSBs are 2kW.

Lancaster's COM4 and COM5 are co-channel with Caldbeck, albeit with opposite offsets.

The powers that be won't release the radiation pattern for Lancaster so we don't know whether there is any restriction in your direction.

The Roose transmitter is co-channel with Lancaster's COMs, albeit that according to its radiation pattern its signal is directed away from the Island. Millom Park is also co-channel with Lancaster's COMs.

You will need a good Group A aerial for reception from Lancaster. See ATV`s Choice Of Aerials for digital TV

Cheers Dave, very helpful indeed.

I have a friend who wants an aerial fitting, who lives at North Scale, Walney Island. It's always been a tricky place for signal reception since the construction of Devonshire Dock Hall, almost in the town centre & directly between that village and Winter Hill. As you suggest there is Millom Park but they don't carry the full Freeview package. Although there is some land higher between Lacaster and Walney I'm hoping the height of the mast may get round this problem.

Got a decent wide band aerial to try out. If that gets anything half decent then I'll buy a quality group A antenna and push the signal through a mast head amp.

With Thanks

using a logix set top box only get picture and sound in first two groups of stations on C27 and C28 although many other channels register and when further investigated on menu have 100% strength. as it is i can only get about a quarter of my channels. the situation has deteriorated. could it be the box last update 2005. everything was ok until comparatively recently. the above applies with a roof aerial. itried to use a set top aerial but it was no good . any suggestions? i seem to have lost the add channels function. would this be any good anyway? at my address i should receive all freeview channels.
