Paul Evans:

Just a thought. Somewhere in your TV Tuning section, it will give Signal Strength, but does it give Signal Quality?
Can you post the Strength and Quality figures for each UHF Channel?
If you can also indicate what they typically are - how much variability under "normal" conditions.
We might be able to make some useful comment.

Paul Evans: While you may have line-of-sight to the transmitting antenna at the top of the mast, the Malvern Hills are well within the Fresnel zone, meaning they could potentially cause reception difficulty. This isn't to say it will.

The radius of the Fresnel zone varies according to frequency, the lower the frequency the longer the wavelength and the bigger the radius. It is largest half way between the two antennas, getting smaller the closer to the two antennas.

The radius of the Fresnel zone as the signal passes over the Malvern Hills is in the region of 82m to 87m. However, line-of-sight at this point is only around 20m above ground at its closest point, this judging by the following terrain plot:

Terrain between ( m a.g.l.) and (antenna m a.g.l.) - Optimising UK DTT Freeview and Radio aerial location

If the reserve antenna is in use, then line-of-sight runs even closer to the ground over the peak, as this is lower down the mast.

Brian Thomas:

This sounds like you are suffering some sort of interference if it's been going on for a long time. However as you haven't given a full postcode, we can't assess your predicted reception and the likelihood of interference.

There'd been Planned Engineering by Arqiva (who maintain the transmitters) in previous weeks as detailed in several posts before yours, but there's been none listed this week and apart from the DAB fault, there's no faults currently listed for Ridge Hill (Freeview).

Arqiva or any Broadcaster are not likely to see your post here, or respond. It's a free technical help-site, but providing that full postcode would enable some assessment of the likely issue.

Hello;
any indications of missing sound track, or "something changed in sound track" for Ridgehill ? Temporarily at GL20 5PG , with 100% signal quality on all channels from an aerial at about 3m height ; using an old LG set (model # M197WDP) sound was dropping for a few seconds on BBC1 last night ; picture stable; today sound is not present for any channels most of the time (picture still stable).

tomorrow I wil be able to test at my usual location with a high aerial and new gear available at the same time to confirm if it is an old dying set issue...

thanks &
regards,
Charlie

Update on my reception problems: The aerial signal went to an unpowered splitter with 2 outputs. The aerial guy has now replaced that with a Labgear 2 In 4 Out amp. I have checked signal quality and it is now well over 90%, 100% in some cases. Things are looking good, so far...
p.s. Only using the UHF input, I don't have VHF or DAB aerial

Paul Evans:

Hi Paul. Thanks for the update. Noting your comment about signal quality, ideally it ought to be 100% in normal circumstances for all multiplexes.
Whilst Ridge Hill isn't listed for Planned Engineering this week, we can never be certain that the lists are totally accurate as we've found instances when work ha over-run.

On the assumption that work is currently complete, I'm wondering that because you've got to use Ridge Hill with obviously weaker signals, whether you may be getting a bit of interference from any new/upgraded phone masts near you. There's at least 4 such potential masts.
Although your postcode supposedly hasn't been send postcards from Restore TV, see
https://restoretv.uk/post…ure/ we have come across a number of cases where fitting the free filter has solved reception problems.

I'd be inclined to give them a call on 0808-1313-800, explain why you can't use Bromsgrove because of the trains and explain that despite your aerial installer making improvements, you do have an amp/splitter, you are still not getting 100% signal Quality and want to try the free filter as there are phone masts near you.
Give it a try, you've nothing to lose.
The filter would need to be fitted at the amp/splitter UHF input.

Chris.SE:
The amp is a Labgear LDA204K. The blurb says it has "Class 1 filtering to provide a typical 40dB protection from interference from 4G and 5G signal transmissions." I'll see how we go for a bit before doing any more tinkering.

Hi Paul. Ah, having looked at it, it does seem a quite well spec'd device. As you say, see how it goes.
