You could try vertical polarisation of your aerial after the April 18 re-tune. This will involve getting your aerial elements rotated through 90 degrees. Before April 18 only a batch of the main BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five etc channels, in three "multiplexes" but not the additional "minor" commercial channels, are being broadcast at 200kW on vertical polarisation. The remaining 3 multiplexes are still at a mere 20kW and horizontal polarisation only, but on April 18 they too will begin to be transmitted on vertical polarisation and at a massively increased 200kW too. With another re-tune and rotating your aerial, you should get all your missing channels back then and be less prone to co-channel interference from French stations.
Failing that, why not get a professional TV or aerial repair person in to sort you out, especially if you cannot sort it out yourself?

Vertical polarisation has its problems too!
Bear in mind that a vertically polarised aerial will be more susceptible to picking up off beam transmissions (the main cause of co-channel interference) because to a certain extent, to those broadcasts from the side the antenna is effectively an efficient vertical dipole.

Umm, I agree that's "sort of true". In a multi-element aerial side transmission reception is minimised by the director and reflector elements (over and above the main dipole element) whichever polarisation you choose. The horizontal wins which is why so many of our UK transmitters use horizontal to minimise side pick-up as we are such a small country. However, as we all know, mid-Southern England have particular problems with weather conditions and Northern France transmissions.
In essence, you have a choice of horizontal - with vertical reflections from layers in the atmosphere/troposphere, or vertical - with unwanted transmissions directly from the sides.
The advantage with the final state of Rowridge, post April 18, is that for the three "minor" commercial multiplexes the vertical transmission is 200kW, whereas the horizontal transmissions will be 50kW. On these multiplexes, this extra power in vertical polarisation must be better in our area! The engineers would not have designed it this way unless there is good reason.
For the other 3 "main" multiplexes they will have 200kW both vertically and horizontally, so it will make little difference which you choose.
And of course that at each unique location will need to try horizontal or vertical after April 18. If the aerial fittings allow, it might be that some might benefit from 45 degree or other polarisation somewhere between full vertical or horizontal polarisation? Just like the "mixed" polarisation for car aerial reception.

I have copied this from another thread as I think this might be a better place to ask the question.
I live in Poole For the last 8 years I have been receiving a good Freeview signal from Rowbridge although technically just outside the area.
Since the switchover I can now only received the ITV channels on channel 37 and no reception from channels 21,24,30, 33 37.
I have a sony KDL-26U3000 a Panasonic TX-L37G20B (I know I've also got freesat) and a Panasonic Freeview HD recorder.
Both TV's are on separate aerials both in the roofspace.
Any help or assistance gratefully received, Digital UK have been hopeless and the BBC not much better.

David Brinkman: Just to exclude something, I would like you to go into the "manual" tuning menu screen on your G20 (and only on) and using the up/down arrows on the large centre button select Rowridges BBC on Ch24, if nothing is shown on the strength / quality bars then "slowly" proceed to pull the aerial plug out "whilst observing the screen", as I would like you to note if when the plug is just about clear of the socket (and no more!) if the strength / quality bars start indicating.
Matter of fact if you slightly offset the plug alignment with the socket so that its touching the socket off centre that's about the correct position for this test.
If though nothing changes, then reinsert the aerial plug and inch the channel up to Ch57 and see if Poole's BBC1 comes in, another channel to test being Mendips BBC on Ch61, giving an update on results.
You will probably already know this, but there is no need to scan anything on the Panasonic because as you inch up the channels it acts like a super sensitive signal sniffer, as the tuner is excellent on that model.
Although it has to be said that you must be in a somewhat better location for reception than the predictor would suggest if pre-DSO1 you were able to receive a reasonably good signal, as you are presently forecast as only being able to have variable reception from the high powered ("H" polarity) PSB muxes and nothing at all from the commercials, although Rowridges "V" polarity PSB's are indicated in the green.

Kim V : It seems there is no straightforward solution. The thing that bothers me and doesn't make much sense is that the TV receives the same channels as the toputv box (in theory), the TV is fine but the box is unwatchable and they share the same roof aerial. I am not receiving downloads and can't record since switchover. Before the switchover the situation was reversed, the box received better than tv. Somehow I suspect a software issue, but topuptv is useless. I was wondering if another box would work better.

Many thanks for coming in for my problem.
I have done the manual tuning and on 24 I get about 2 on the quality and 0 on strength. Pulling the aerial cable out so that it touches the socket off centre the quality dropped to 0.
I did check on 27 the commercial channel that I am receiving and got quality of 2 and strength of 2, on both 57 and 61 I got 0 but of course the aerial is pointing in the wrong direction.
Prior to the "improvement" following the switchover I think I was getting between 7 & 9 for most channels.

Freeview mainly OK, but channel 33 shows poor signal quality, constantly varying - all other channels show 100%.
Do I need a newer aerial , or change to vertical or what?
