For the past few days my father at BH15 2QE and I at BH14 8HJ (Poole) have both lost all BBC Freeview TV and radio channels for long periods of time. We both have new Panasonic Viera TV's, his connected to a newish communal aerial - not sure where it is pointing, and mine to a newish aerial which I thought was picking up Rowridge. Strangely my old Sony connected to a small aerial sticking through the bedroom wall is much less affected. I have been told the problem is because the French have turned up their signal strength and there are no plans for us to do likewise until next year. In the meantime it may be possible to retune on to Mendip aerial but this means I will lose local news programmes. This seems no way to run a switchover. It would have been nice if someone official had publicised what is going on - but perhaps this was done on the BBC South News when I couldn't receive it!

Honest John: According to the Digital UK postcode checker reception from Rowridge is marginal to poor at your location with no reception at all shown for MuxB. As you say, Mendip is shown as offering good reception on all six muxes. It is interesting to note that after switchover you are not expected to receive the COM muxes at all from Rowridge due to co-channel interference. You might find that an aerial on Mendip linked via a group A to E diplexer to a second aerial on Rowridge will be needed to receive all services and the correct local news! Regarding your father's location reception from Rowridge is somewhat better after switchover, the COM muxes being shown as variable, although if he still has reception problems then, his aerial could benefit from being set to a new vertically polarised signal which is due to be added at Rowridge after switchover in 2012. There is no alternative signal from Mendip shown for BH15 2QE.

Thanks for your comments, KMJ Derby. I guess what is hard is when a service we had invested time and money to achieve, in an admittedly marginal situation, is taken away from us without warning. In our innocence we thought the switchover process would be a series of reception improvements, with an occasional retune necessary, until we reached the promised land. In my father's case, the communal aerial on his block of sheltered flats was only installed a few months ago and is currently pretty useless. If I had known what the Freeview switchover had in store for us I would have definitely gone down the satellite route.

Honest John: The problem is that because they're doing the switchover piece-by-piece, some previously working sites are compromised when others switch over. Where possible these are being balanced with power increases, but it's not happening everywhere. Also, the commercial multiplex power increases are often being delayed until later stages in switchover. Six multiplexes into four radio channels doesn't go, especially when you're also releasing about one-third of the channels. (The UHF TV channel allocations were designed for four networks only.)
In addition we're getting extra interference from the continent, as in many cases they're launching terrestrial digital TV for the first time. France seems to have completely reorganized its map, rather than reusing channels that they had used before. There has been co-ordination for the final frequency assignments, but I don't think there has for the current low-power Freeview channels.
