I posted this on the Freeview changed reception and Mike Dimmick gave me some info that hasn't worked. Can anyone help?

Hi i have a brand new (less than 6 weeks old) Samsung tv with built in freeview

We had full channel access til 13th April and now we are missing Multiplexes 2 and A.

We live in Nottingham city centre, in an apartment block. NG1 1AS

I have done a factory reset, aswell as taken out the aerial and rescanned, unplugged and then rescanned once again!

EEK!

Hello Andy.

Presumably if you are Nottingham City Centre (such as Victoria Centre Flats) you will be able to get both Nottingham's Transmissions, which are now switched over (and assumed to be high power now?), and Waltham's.

Being East of the City, we point our aerial at Waltham, but even before DSO at Nottingham, it was possible to pick up Nottingham's Signal. I use a PC and a Program called DVBViewer which will discriminate between the two signals.

However, my Mother's TV upstairs, also using my aerial, has no problems. I have a Wide-Band, multi-element, high gain aerial, horizontally polerized, and directed only at Waltham (highly directional).

Do you know what direction your aerial lies in, and where your main signal was being received from prior to 13th April (ie before Nottingham DSO'ed)?

Even if it is a new TV, are you sure it is able to cope with 8k mode transmissions (if aimed at Nottingham)?

Andy Moss: You didn't previously mention it was an apartment block. It may be that the communal aerial system is a 'channelized' system, in which case it probably needs retuning.

Channelized systems filter and amplify each frequency separately. If a transmission changes channels, the filter needs to be adjusted to the new frequency.

The landlord or building manager needs to ensure that the system is retuned and the levels set correctly at each switchover step. See http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/transmitternetwork/tools__and__resources/almanac/installer_newsletters_transmitter_groups2009_pdfs/Special_edition-installers_Waltham_retuneFINAL_Aug11.pdf for the remaining steps.

It might be necessary for the system to be adjusted again when the SDN multiplex reaches its final power level on 12 October. You will need to retune on this day because SDN also changes mode.

Waltham is also currently allocated a frequency for the BBC A multiplex, C61, that is going to be released for 800MHz mobile phone services.

Generally allocations of C61 move to C49, which Waltham already uses for low-power Mux 1, but it may not be able to go high-power on that frequency immediately because The Wrekin is still using it for SDN. The final allocation for that service at The Wrekin is being used by Sutton Coldfield until 21 September. If they're sensible, they'll move Waltham BBC A on the 12th of October as well.

Brian: Did you retune on the 13th of April? On that date, the Multiplex 2 transmissions from Waltham moved from C23 to C31 because of a clash with The Wrekin when it started high-power transmissions a week later.

You would need to do a first-time installation (also called a Default Setting, a Factory Reset, or Full Retune) to ensure that the box forgets the previous location of the channels. Some will not store channels that they think they already know about.

There's a chance that your box would store channels from Waltham even though the aerial points at Belmont, if the fringe reception is strong enough. Some just store the first version that they find. Check whether there's another copy of ITV1 stored somewhere else, for example at around 800 (this is a common location, but not the only one).

Check what UHF channel the box says it has stored. From Belmont, ITV1 and the other Multiplex 2 channels are on UHF C48. If it is storing Waltham multiplexes, you may need to manually tune in, probably after deleting the incorrectly-stored channels or resetting the box. See Digital Region Overlap for more suggestions.
