My postcodeis NG2 7df and get my signal from the Waltham transmitter. Since switchover I have struggled to get quality non-HD BBC channels on either my set top box ( an old Inverto ) or my new Panasonic HD TV. Looking at signal strength on both bits of hardware I see very variable signal quality for everything on CH61 ( sometimes its 10/10 and others its appalling ) but consistent good quality for all other channels. I have an old non high gain aerial and live on the edge of the transmission area.I am at a loss after reading all hints on the site to work out what the issue might be.ANy sensible explanation gratefully received
I've rung a local installer who suggests using Nottingham instead but the signal strengths look much lower, will that work ?

Brian: I live in your area and found that when I did the last retune I was getting my BBC signal on channel 43 (I don't know which transmitter this is but the ID says West Midlands). The stronger BBC signal for our area is Waltham (channel 61) and my tuner shoved those stations into the 800s. The result was that I got poor reception because I was now on some other transmitter.
Are you certain you're on 61? My TV tunes to 61 but my PVR to 43.
BTW just as you go up Musters Hill many houses are high enough up to get Nottingham (they have vertical aerials) but it shouldn't be necessary because the signal here on Waltham 61 is fine and I'm only a few blocks away from you.

Sammisdat.The BBCA mux on ch 43 yer referring to,West Midlands is the Sutton Coldfield transmitter.Difficult to say without a full postcode.If you only want Waltham transmissions first step delete all your channels.Unplug either freeview box or IDTV from the mains,unplug your aerial either from freeview box or IDTV,wait roughly 30 seconds,plug either freeview box or IDTV back in,keep your aerial plugged out for now and perform a complete automatic scan (if you have this function) from ch's 21 to 68 (or 69).It will completely fail,in other words your channel line up will be empty,but in doing so it clears the memory so after this replug your aerial back in to your freeview box or IDTV and rescan again.If you have a manual scanning function,scan SDN ch29,D3+4 ch54,ArqA ch56,ArqB ch57,BBCB ch58 (if your freeview box is HD,or your IDTV is (full) HD) BBCA ch61,these are Waltham transmitter mux's.However if you do not have a manual scanning option,then you will have to do an automatic scan but in this instance,keep your aerial plugged out until ch 27 is reached,plug aerial in,once SDN ch29 is stored unplug your aerial again after ch31,because between ch39 to ch46 are Sutton Coldfield's 6 multiplexes,replug your aerial back in when it reaches ch52 for the other Waltham multiplexes i described earlier above will store between ch54 and ch61,and to be on the safe side unplug your aerial after ch63 until the automatic scanning procedure is completed when it should hopefully go onto programme no1 BBC1,but with no signal,now replug your aerial back in and you will get your TV signals back hopefully with just the Waltham transmissions that you require,and no Sutton Coldfield transmissions whatsoever.

As of this morning my freeview HD channels have Funny lines on them.
Anybody know why? All has been fine previously.

Michael.Monday 24 October 2011,12.06pm.Difficult to say without a full postcode,possibly Single frequency interference could be a cause,but you need to be more specific such as what aerial is it pointing to,and what aerial group,plus is it IDTV or Freeview HD box (or +HD),is it directed horizontally (to a main transmitter) or vertically (to a relay).Is it only the BBCB (HD) multiplex yer experiencing this problem,or are the other multiplexes affected to a degree.

Soemthing happened at the Waltham transmitter today at approx' 11:00am, as my recording software 'crashed' (and just kept recording continuously for the next few hours!) - I now know why.
Thank you for the information above re BBC signal quality today - it helped solve the 'mystery' of why the software crashed (which is usually very stable).

timonthenet: "BBC Digital TV Reduced Quality" means the fibre-optic (or off air at relays) terrestrial provisioning system has failed and the backup satellite-based (Intelsat 907 at 27.5W) has been switched to.
This doesn't have all the correct regional data in the bitstreams, as it is intended for short-term emergency use (four minutes this time).
