Ok,now i'm confused, just retuned the tv and that is also picking up BBC East and West. The East is on channel 48 which is Derby relay, i am only getting 17 on signal strength with bit error fluctuating betwen 9 and 14 so maybe it's the weather because it never used to pick it up, oh well, put the champagne back.

Jim: Have you installed another aerial for Waltham?
Sutton Coldfield doesn't transmit East Midlands variants, so they (the ones you picked up) must be coming from Waltham or one of its relays. Therefore, if you managed to get East Midlands using your aerial that points at SC, you were getting it from somewhere else.
The box you say asked you which region you wanted. Find out what UHF channels it has picked for East Midlands. Then you will be able to work out what transmitter it has picked up (irrespective of whether the aerial points at it).
Does the cheapo box work from the same aerial as the main TV?

Alvaro: Try carrying out this procedure:
My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice
Can you try manually tuning (to Waltham)? (DN31NJ)

Alvaro: In addition to Dave Lindsay's advice, if you still do not find any signal when scanning, check that the aerial cable is continuous from the aerial with no splitters or amplifiers installed that should be powered via a power supply which was taken away by the previous resident, also there are no breaks in continuity in other rooms where other equipment such as a VCR used to be connected.

Is Waltham now radiating at the max power level on all MUXs or will it be increased once the DSO has completed nationwide? We get 100% signal level and quality on all but HD channels with an indoor loft aerial, HD is at 77% and wondering whether to put outdoor aerial up or wait for a power increase. Rothley Leics.

btb77: Unless you're needing to split the signal (and therefore need it to be stronger from your aerial to do so), then so long as you have 100% quality it is OK. No improvement can be made unless the current setup causes break-up at certain times.
This is different from analogue where stronger signals generally meant an improved picture.
If it's mounted in the loft, then moving it might bring up the HD mux strength. But then you might introduce problems with others.
According to documents from Ofcom and Digital UK (links below):

The PSB muxes (which includes the HD one) is at 50kW whereas the COMs are 25kW.
