I am confident that I can fit a rooftop aerial myself. Which one would be good for an area with medium to strong signals, where do I buy it and how much does it cost?

Charles Stuart: A log periodic:

Aerials, TV Aerial and Digital Aerial

Mendip Transmitter

Other retailers and aerial models are available.

ATV's "DM Log" is a Blake DML26WB.

The "Log 36" (previously "Log 40") is a Vision:

TV & Radio Aerials Catalogue » Vision Products - Powerful Products. Easy Installation. Excellent Value

The gain curves of logs are much flatter than those of yagis, plus you would appear to be in a good signal area so the log must be the best bet.

You can't use a Grouped aerial because Mendip uses channels across the entire band. Also, current Mendip Group C/D channels may be moved downwards in future to accomodate more mobile services.

Interesting thing is that I can receive Com 7 using an indoor aerial, with a signal booster, but the old roof aerial gets nothing. Definitely need a new roof aerial.

Charles Stuart: I suspect you've got a "grouped" rooftop aerial, whereas your indoor aerial is wideband.

The "old" allocation for this transmitter was C/D. If you didn't get Channel 5 on analogue very week, this would certainly be the case.

Dave Lindsay, thanks for your post, though I already knew the information you've given me. Being in Bristol, a Sheffield retailer isn't very convenient - I try to avoid mail order. Specifically what I want to know is where can I buy one locally and how much does it cost?

Briantist, yes, it is C/D group. I suspect it's the aerial put up with the house in 1972 and probably needs to be renewed anyway. The cable probably needs to be renewed too but income limitations mean that I can't do that yet. I'll just change the aerial for now.

Charles Stuart: The "curves" for the various aerial groups are listed on Aerial group performance | Rigger's zone | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice

Basically C/D is -30dB for C33, which is - in a nutshell - "signal blocked".
