No, it is a perfectly natural and normal phenomen associated with the movement and changes of high and low pressure areas and with the differing air temperatures found within the Earth's atmosphere. It has affected all transmissions of radio waves ever since the were first transmitted but existed long before then anyway as they are not man-made. How much the radio signals are affected depends to some extent on the area affected, whether it is small or large, and the frequency of the radio signals.
There is no known way to 'protect' ourselves from the effects either. All you can do is ensure you have good equiupment, well maintained and a properly aligned aerial of the correct type for the signal(s) you want to receive.

RH16 1NW, using old band c/d aerial directed at Heathfield transmitter.
Since BBC Local radio went digital I had expected to be able to receive BBC Radio Sussex on the Heathfield transmitter. Unfortunaely I can only get BBC Radio Kent which is not local to us in Haywards Heath. Why no 'local' radio?

Hi
I live not far from the Heathfield transmitter but seem to keep losing the signal at 1:07am - can anyone tell me why?
Last night I lost all stations as I was watching TV and in the past couple of months I have been recording films only for the signal to be lost ast 67 minutes of recording - programmes having started at midnight.
At all other times the signal is fine - I don not having any other problems.
I look forward to receiving any comments / feedback.

For anyone to offer meaningful assistance they need a full post code of your location or that of a very nearby shop or post office. That is so that we can determine which transmitter you may be using and whether there are any engineering works or line of sight obstructions.

My postcode is TN21 8LX - I am about a mile from the Heathfield transmitter. As I said the strange thing with this is that the signal has gone on at least 3 different occasions at 1:07am.

Your are extremely close to the transmitter! It may be that your signal is just too strong for reliable reception. Could you check what the strength is on several channels, including any that are affected by the problem. The ideal strength is between 50% and 75% normally, any higher than that will cause apparent loss of signal as it's too strong for the tuner. The cooler atmosphere at night can sometimes cause changes in the transmission efficiency of the surrounding air.
The other point to check is whether there is any electrical equipment in the vicinity that come on or goes off at that time. Any warehouse, factory or office with such equipment can cause problems if there is a fault present.
You should also check whether you have any electrical equipment that comes on or goes off at that time, such as central heating controls, timers, etc.
