Tunbridge Wells

Hi, visiting my Mother today and found that her Freeview reception has changed. She is in Tunbridge Wells (TN4 9EN number 12) and has no BBC channels. On further investigation it appears that 2 muliplexes are missing...BBCA and SDN (only getting 71 channels on an automatic scan). I have tried the Freeview Reset Procedure and a factory reset of the box (TVOnics DTR HV-250), but to no avail. When I try a manual tune of channel 52 (Tunbridge Wells channel for BBCA), there is a very weak or no signal and no channels are found, the other channels on the other 4 multiplexes are working fine.

I have no TV/aerial experience, but it sounds like an aerial problem to me, hoever this problem only started happening in the last few days. We don't know how old the aerial is, but my Mum reports it last being checked about 14 years ago. All connections at the back of the equipment seem fine and I can see nothing visible with the roof-top aerial or cabling. Could these symtoms be a fault with the digibox, or is it more likely to be a new fault with the aerial...

Any ideas?

Thanks, Mark.

Mark Chapman:

You are right in thinking it is a problem with your mother's aerial system. If you can, check all the connections that are accessible. Make sure that the coaxial cable is fitted correctly and that the inner core and out braiding are entirely separate. Unplug each coaxial plug and re-insert it into the socket - light corrosion of the contact is a known cause of your problems.

If that fails, then you need the services of an aerial installer - but don't let them fob you off with a new 'digital' aerial as there is no such thing. If the aerial has to be changed, then have a log-periodic fitted as that will cover all current and future transmissions as fas a can be foreseen.

Thanks for your reply Mike...not used to these forums so apologies if I'm responding inappropriately. I had to leave my mum to it in the end since I was returning to North Wales - but put her in touch with an aerial engineer who apparently has since been round and identified and fixed the problem (something to do with the aerial cabling I believe)...so all sorted, thanks for taking the trouble to rely though. Regards, Mark.
