The symbol shows the location of the Belmont (Lincolnshire, England) transmitter which serves 710,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Belmont (Lincolnshire, England) mast?

Dean Morris: That's the snag with older boxes that state as being compatible with 8K signals, as although in some cases if they are its usually in a very erratic fashion and something only really being rectifiable with a software update, this not being guaranteed to exist any longer as I couldn't find any on various checks I made including one on Samsungs support site.

Of course this suspected 8K incompatibility problem will be proven or other wise come the 17th of the month when the main switchover happens, as the ITV channels will also be changing to 8K operation at the same time as going onto high power, so if this is the problem then they should likewise vanish.

Just a small point though, I take it you have tried the Samsung using your daughters aerial input? and just out of curiosity what signal do you see on her box when on BBC's Mux Ch22?

jb38: Thanks for your attempts again. Yes I expect to lose more channels on 17th Aug. We'll see? The Goodmans and the Samsung are both on the same circuit using the same aerial on a 'Select SLX PSU Masterhead amplifier power supply'. I have tried the Samsung upstairs on the other aerial connection, but the BBCA group is still missing.

On the Goodmans, BBC News channel has Singal 80+% and Quality 85+%. So this looks good.

On the Samsung, there is a menu option 'Check for download'. It has always been version 1.1. New version has always been N/A. There has never been a new download available, and I have checked often.

I think the Samsung SDT-7000 Plus is finished, unless the 17th brings a resurrection. Would you agree? Once again, thanks for help.

Dean Morris: Well with what you report on the comprehensive tests carried out I would think its reasonably safe to assume the Samsung is doomed, and I suspect something that you may well be thinking yourself, insomuch that come the end of the 17th the final nail is most likely to have been put in the Samsungs coffin, so to speak! that is if the ITV channels also vanish, which in theory they will do!

I intend to make further checks on your Samsung though, although if any sources are found that offers free firmware updates for older boxes, the usual snag encountered there is that these have to be installed via a RS232 lead from a PC, something not really convenient for the majority people.

By the way your signal strength report on the Goodman's is as you say OK!

PS: This could really be taken as a good time to think along the lines of a Freeview PVR, something like a Humax or similar!

Richard Paskin: No one seems to have made any reply to you, so here goes.
It looks to me that the Sagem is having the same problems with 8K mode with other channels' 2K mode.
See also jb38 7 Aug. 08:10 above:
"The point is that although the zero indication on your Samsung's manual scan could be because of it having a problem in responding to Ch22's 8K operating mode ..."

Otherwise make sure you have done a full retune, first time installation', 'factory reset' or whatever Sagem call it. This will be particularly important as it is still using Ch. 22.
As a matter of interest, is Belmont the best transmitter for east of Buxton? I was quite surprised - expected Emley Moor, Sheffield, or even Winter Hill.

jb38: I should tell you the Samsung SDT-7000 Plus does not have a RS232 input on the back. The Goodmans does but not the Samsung. So even if you find an update I'm not sure how it would be uploaded?

With regard to the Freeview PVR, I've seen a picture of it but I'm completely unfamiliar. Does it have a hand remote? I was looking at the Labgear FV300 as a replacement. It seems to have good reviews.

I will update you on 17th with fate of the Samsung. Once again, thanks for your efforts.

Richard Paskin: I sounds like you are having similar problems to me and my Samsung SDT-7000 Plus. If you find any information on how to remedy your box I'd be interested. I'll let you know the fate of mine.

Richard Paskin: The Sagem PVR6240T is on Digital UK's list of equipment known to have trouble with the 'Split NIT' that the broadcasters started using in 2008. The Network Information Table carries information about all the multiplexes available from your transmitter, and that information no longer fits into one block - it is 'split' into multiple blocks. Receivers that expect it to be in one block will fail to store some channels when retuned, or store them in the wrong place.

There was supposed to be an over-the-air update available for this box, but if you missed it, try calling 0871 075 0710 for advice.

Dean Morris: The Samsung SDT-7000 Plus dates from 2003/4, so could have trouble with 2K and 8K mode on different multiplexes, despite claiming to support both modes: although it doesn't appear on Digital UK's list of known bad equipment at http://www.digitaluk.co.u…ment , a Samsung box of a similar age does appear.

If it just doesn't like having a mix of modes, it should work properly after the second stage in two weeks (17 August), when all multiplexes from Belmont will use the 8K mode. If nothing works after that date, you'll probably have to replace the box. Don't forget to retune after 6 am on the 17th. Do ensure that you do a full retune/full reset/first-time installation, to clear out any previous channel information which might confuse the box.

I have had decent Freeview on most channels for some time. I live in hu3 have a roof mounted wideband ariel, decent cable and signal booster/4 way splitter to distribute to other rooms in the house. After retuning on the 3rd August (full factory reset) on Panasonic tv I have experienced v poor reception on BBC channels (freezes, pixelation in bands, popping sounds etc). Also reception on some other channels seems to break up occasionally. I hoped the switchover would bring improvements in picture quality and am very disappointed. Any suggestions or advice would be gratefully appreciated
