Was there a problem with the transmission of HD Freeview signals (BBC1HD, ITV1HD, CH4HD), on Friday evening of the 27th January 2012 from the Belmont transmitter?

Our TV, a SONY KDL-46HX923 repeatedly showed a black screen for a duration of about 2 seconds, at random time intervals on each of the above HD channels on that evening.

Internet blogs suggested that the same symptoms were seen on many other manufactures TV's, and that it was due to the transmitter streaming the HD signal was switching between 1080p and 1080i repeatedly, also suggested was that some TV's were less prone to this problem.

What is the true cause of the symptoms I viewed on that Friday evening?

Was it a transmitter problem?

The symptoms were only with the HD signals, the standard definition signal on each of the effected channels was fine.

I would be very interested if someone could explain this please.

andrew packer: ITV4, Russia Today and Film4 are carried on the Arqiva B multiplex which is on channel 60 from Belmont. Try manually tuning to channel 60.

Check that you have ITV3 (carried on SDN) and Pick TV (which is on Arqiva A).

Are you in part of the town which cannot receive from Emley Moor?

Andrew Packer: I think that the answer is likely to be your aerial; you need a wideband one.

Pick TV (and other Arqiva A channels) and Yesterday, ITV4 (and other Arqiva B channels) are at the top of the band.

Belmont was a Group A transmitter which means that it only used channels in the lower third of the band. Consequently aerials that were installed for it were Group A ones. This means that they are much more sensitive at the bottom third of the band and less sensitive higher up.

ITV3 (carried on SDN multiplex) and BBC and ITV1, C4 etc are all in Group A, hence why I believe that you can pick them up.

Andrew Packer,Doncaster DN5.One other option to receieve the ArqA (fr 53) and ArqB (fr 60) multiplexes from Belmont is to diplex your aerial. In other words use your current group A (tipped red) aerial for the BBCA (fr 22),D3+4 (fr 25),SDN (fr 30) and if you have it BBCB (HD) (fr 28) multiplexes, and diplex with another antenna, either a group C/D (tipped green),a group E (tipped brown) or a group W wideband (tipped black) aerial. Is your local BBC 1 Look North broadcasting East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire news (Belmont). The problem with Belmont although officially a group W wideband aerial transmitter is that all but two multiplexes are on group A frequencies and group W widebands antennas have an inferior performance on group A frequencies especially on all group A transmitters say Crystal Palace,Durris,Caradon Hill and Rowridge as examples. One further problem with Belmont's ArqB on frequency 60 once 4G starts is the potential for interference on this multiplex especially if frequency 61 is used as such.
