There has been a fire this afternoon at the Bilsdale transmitter, resulting in all Freeview, DAB and FM Radio services being taken off air (some DAB and FM services may still be receivable with a weaker signal due overlapping coverage from other transmitters). The BBC are reporting that Arqiva have started work on restoring services, but depending on the extent of the damage it could take some time for repairs to be completed.

Do not attempt to retune as this will not bring the signal back and could delete your channel list, making it more difficult to know when the signal has returned.

Please note that iPlayer and Freesat are still working, so if you have either of these (or cable), you should have access to some channels at least.

I usually watch freeview TV or listen to it at night when I can't sleep. I would like a refund on my TV licence. Please advise.

Carol Hills: You won't be able to get a refund on your TV Licence for a transmitter being off air. It is a licence to use television receiving equipment and BBC iPlayer, it isn't a subscription and does not guarantee any particular service being provided.

Postcode DL116PH. I have a rooftop digital aerial with a wired connection to the TV points in the house, but there has been no signal coming through for the last few days. Also, I am unable to receive analogue FM radio signals on my portable radio receivers. Can this be anything to do with the Bilsdale transmitter?

If your aerial is pointing pretty much Due E then yes it will be.

Even though your aerial is pointing the wrong way, you might be able to get some signal off the Whitaside Light Relay transmitter (PSB multiplexes only) which is a relay of Pontop Pike, so should be working (2km from you).
It's UHF channels are C37, C47, C48 for PSBs 1,2, & 3, if you could manual tune that would be the best option BUT retuning will lose the correct Bilsdale tuning so you'll have to retune again to get Bilsdale back WHEN it's working but it's likely to be a limited service initially when it is and it's some distance from you (56km).

Bilsdale's UHF channels are at the very top of this page except PSBs 1 & 3 are interchanged. The 13 Nov 2019 list lower down is NOT up-to-date.

Note to other readers - which other transmitters you might be able to get (if any) will depend upon location. Consider on-line or Freesat if you are stuck.

The BBC are now reporting that viewers in Hartlepool, Redcar and eastern parts of Middlesborough should now be able to receive a limited Freeview service (PSB1/2/3 multiplexes) from a temporary high power transmitter at Eston Nab (which usually operates at very low power to serve a small area) however viewers may need to manually tune to UHF channels 27, 24 and 21. I have also seen seen reports that the Whitby relay is back on air using a satellite backup feed, which may carry the wrong BBC One region.

Arqiva announced earlier today that a temporary mast is being transported to Bilsdale in order to start restoring services, although it will be shorter than the existing mast and could take several days or weeks to enter service.

The BBC have created a dedicated reception advice page, where you can subscribe to receive further updates via email:
